Rowan as a boy name?

BubbleAndSquark · 15/07/2017 22:14

We've finally found a boys name that we both like, but the only thing putting me off is it being unisex.

Would you think of a boy or girl when you hear Rowan, or would you think of it as either equally? Don't want to give him a name where people are surprised he's a boy after hearing it!

Also, would you pronounce it more row-an or row-un when reading it?

I know 5 Rowans - 4 are male (3 boys, 1 adult) and 1 female (adult)

All pronounce it Row-un.

I think it's a lovely name

Rowan is a lovely name for a boy. However, the boy does need to be red-haired otherwise it seems a misnomer.

MrsGotobed · 16/07/2017 13:55

Not one of the 5 Rowans I know has red hair!

Boy. Nice.

Have met a few boy Rowans and zero girls.

Wilhelminaaa · 16/07/2017 20:01

Rowan Atkinson for me too, so much prefer it for a boy. Lovely name.

I've known male Rowans but never a female one. Also, the only famous Rowans I ve heard of are male (Rowan Williams, Rowan Atkinson).

However, when I was little I had a series of books about a family where one of the girls was called Rowan so I did associate it with girls when I was small.

I love it.

Have taught a girl Rowan and a boy Rohan (pronounced Rowan, not like LOTR).

This is my favourite boys name ever but sadly DH vetoed it. I think of it as unisex but primarily a boys name. I absolutely love it.

There were 2 rowans in my year at school, one was a boy and one was a girl. If you like it, use it 😊

auntym · 16/07/2017 20:48

Either but prefer it for a boy.

Pinkandgreenandblue · 16/07/2017 23:19

I love it

I know both a girl and boy Rowan so sounds truly unisex to me. Love it for both.

Boy row-un

LucyWilliams · 17/07/2017 15:42

I'd assume it's a boy's name and I think it's a nice name as well.

I think of Rowan Atkinson, more commonly known as Mr. Bean.

I love it, and I have a beautiful Rowan tree (mountain ash) in my garden, so I love it for that reason too.
