My friend is down to these 3 on her shortlist for a boy and would like to know which people prefer. Smile

Jonathan or Laurence (not Lawrence). Not keen on Adam.

Laurence. Then probably just Johnny. Then Adam.

Adam is too popular.

So funny, I have a Lawrence and was dithering over the u/w spelling but the MN consensus at the time was 100% w! I guess it depends on the day.

Obviously I think you should go with Lawrence... 😁

MrsHathaway · 10/07/2017 19:14

I have an Adam and we have encountered two others in his entire life (neither of which at nursery/preschool/school). It may be popular elsewhere but it's unusual here.

Unlike Lawrence/Laurence and Jonathan/Johnathon everyone can easily spell it and pronounce it and it travels well.

My only annoyance with it - which I didn't know about before he arrived - is the schwa or nonspecific vowel in the second vowel. When someone shouts or sings his name (eg up the stairs "Adam, put your shoes on" or "Happy birthday dear Adam") it turns into Aderm or Addim ConfusedHmm whereas in my accent it's pronounced Ad'm almost as one syllable.

I like all three, but Jonny is better than Laurie.

Lemondrop99 · 10/07/2017 19:48

Lawrence

Raines100 · 10/07/2017 22:51

Adam by a mile. It's a good strong boy's name. The other two are... not.

SuperBeagle · 10/07/2017 23:23

Lawrence, but I also prefer the spelling Laurence.

Don't dislike Jonathan, but yes, people are inclined to spell it incorrectly. There's a well known rugby player here whose name is spelt Johnathan and it just looks... wrong.

I find Adam just about the most boring name that has ever existed.

ZenNudist · 10/07/2017 23:26

Laurence

CocoLoco87 · 10/07/2017 23:27

Tough one between Lawrence and Jonathan...

Not keen on Adam.

thenightsky · 10/07/2017 23:29

I've got a Lawrence so am bias. People often say 'what a lovely name'.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 11/07/2017 06:08

Love Jonathan.

Especially with NN Joe. Know several, of very differing ages.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 11/07/2017 11:08

Love Lawrence.

TurquoiseOwl · 11/07/2017 16:51

Jonathan (but I like the NN Jonny) Smile Adam would be 2nd!

FfionFlorist · 11/07/2017 16:58

Jonathan (Jonny) is the only one I like

Decaffstilltastesweird · 11/07/2017 19:24
  1. Lawrence - really like
  2. Adam - really like
  3. Jonathan - every adult Jonathan I know is a prize wanker, so that has put me off the name sadly.
17caterpillars1mouse · 11/07/2017 20:38

Adam

ilivebythesea · 11/07/2017 20:40

Adam. Don't like the other two, I'm afraid, at all.

CPtart · 11/07/2017 21:00

Adam, I have one. Classless, timeless, a strong name not often shortened. And not massively popular either. Only two in the whole of his high school.
Lawrence is nice but dislike Laurie. Jonathan is a bit wet.
