Eleni - yes or no?

Hi all

I am expecting my first baby (girl) and for years I have loved the name Eleni (pronounced 'ellenee'). It is very popular in Greece and is a form of Helen, but very uncommon in the U.K. I love the name itself and also like the fact that it lends itself to so many variations that my daughter can choose from if she wants to, Ellie, Elle, Ella, Leni etc.

I would really appreciate people's thoughts!

I like it but I would assume it was pronounced Ell-en-ee.

Lovely, I have never heard of Elunid before. Did you mean Eluned. It is pronounced El-IN-ed, usually shortened to Luned (LIN-ed) or Lin/Lyn.
Eleni is "this year" in welsh so it is a surprising choice. Eleri is a fairly popular welsh name (popular as in well-liked not dozens of them) and is pronounce El-ERRy (usually shortened to Leri, rhymes with Kerry).

Eleni, greek name, same as Helen, is I believe pronounced El-ENNy but I would guess that it will be mispronounced as Elainey or Elleny. Nice though.

It's lovely, and the Greek pronunciation is very nice.

El-ay-nee isn't wrong. It's the German pronunciation, so go in knowing you will get both alternatives and just correct people.

Mike, My apologies, her name is spelt Elenid but certainly not Eluned. I know her as Leni. I also know an Eluned but her name is never shortened.

Thank you all for your comments, I really appreciate them. I hadn't heard Eleri, so I will also consider that. Now time to persuade DP!

Hello LovelyBranches. Elenid is a pretty name. (I quite like Enid as it's an old Welsh name pronounced like Any with a d on the end. Don't like the Enid as in Blyton pronunciation)

i really like it! i have only ever heard it once before it was a little girl at my nephews school! i have never forgotten it. really pretty with out it being too 'girly' it would suit any age :)

I know a lady whose daughter is called this. Apparently it means star. The Eleni in question is super smart and absolutely beautiful. I think it's a lovely name personally. How much of that is down to the positive association with her I'm unsure, but I like it.
