Have heard this comment a few times in relation to the name Dashiell (for a boy). It seems to be meant in a negative way. What do you think?

honeysucklejasmine · 02/07/2017 07:39

Yes, but that's not a negative to me.

BertrandRussell · 02/07/2017 07:42

I suppose because it's a surnamey name?
The pronounciation issue would make it a no from me.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/07/2017 07:42

Yes very much so.

grasspigeons · 02/07/2017 07:43

Yes because the only one i know is american, but its not a negative.

greendale17 · 02/07/2017 07:44

Horrible name

Popskipiekin · 02/07/2017 07:45

I know a couple of Dashiells actually, bizarrely. North London. They get called Dash/Dashy. Think they both really like their name (

ScarletSienna · 02/07/2017 07:47

I don't think American straight away. I do mildly panic every time I see it though as I never remember how to pronounce it!

Bovneydazzlers · 02/07/2017 07:47

Yes, it does sound American to me.

Also reminds me of 'Daesh' (ISIS). Sorry.

SorrelSoup · 02/07/2017 07:47

Just made me think of Dashiell Hammett, so probably very strong American connotations!

kmini · 02/07/2017 07:48

I think i first heard it as one of kate blanchett's sons name. She's Australian, but would consider it rather cool if someone like her chose it. Love dash .

hophop333 · 02/07/2017 07:48

Yes but more than that it sounds like a reindeer

BrexitSucks · 02/07/2017 08:37

One of my fave names, though I would spell it with one L.
In which case people will assume it's a typo & you meant Daniel. Would have to get used to that.
American not really... only could be because of Hammett & Sam Spade, right?

SuperBeagle · 02/07/2017 08:47

Yes. Dashiell Hammett.

That's not necessarily a negative thing, though.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/07/2017 09:02

Yes, but who cares !
I love the nick name Dash.😄

MyNewBearTotoro · 02/07/2017 09:03

I've never heard it before so would t think it American, it sounds sort of made up or surnamey to me.

PratStick · 02/07/2017 09:06

Is American the worst thing ever? Why does it matter?

I think Dash as a nn is adorable

PratStick · 02/07/2017 09:07

Oh and as an American, I've never heard the name before

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 02/07/2017 09:07

I've never heard this name, it doesn't sound American to me, more a yoonique name or one that you got from a TV series.

Is it pronounced Dashiell to rhyme with bell or Dashile to rhyme with bile?

PratStick · 02/07/2017 09:15

Yes, this would be why I've never heard it. Grin

So strange the things people on MN think are American...

Does Dashiell sound "American" to you?
PratStick · 02/07/2017 09:16

I'd rhyme it with beal

grasspigeons · 02/07/2017 09:20

It the boy in The Incredibles which is quite American feel

newbian · 02/07/2017 09:22

I'm American and never heard it before.

PratStick someone claimed the name "Bleu" is popular in America which is a complete lie! Bizarre and no idea where it comes from.

34AQuid · 02/07/2017 09:22

Yes, its very American, but not in a 'made-up' sort of way (which i think some American names can have).

I instantly think of Dashiell Hammet.

IrritatedUser1960 · 02/07/2017 09:24

It sounds like something off supernatural if I'm honest.

PratStick · 02/07/2017 09:26

Yes New, remember being in a class full of Bleus? HmmConfused
