Well it can be, but the most obvious female versions of John are Jane, Joan or Jean.

In the 16th and 17th centuries John was Johan, so it's a very old variation.

Jane, Joan, Janet, Joanne, Joanna, and Jean are feminine versions of John.
You can also use names from other languages - Sian, Sheena, Sinead, Siobhan, Gianna, Ivana, Jeanne, Johanna, Juana, Juanita, Jana, Sioned, Siwan, Janette, Janine, etc.( Some of the names are missing the accents.)
