What names do you love but can't or won't use?

Maybe because it doesn't go with your surname, you know someone with that name, it's just a bit too "out there"...

Alex has always been my favourite, favourite name for a boy - but since it's DH's name, that's ruled out for me. At least he has it instead!

There are also a lot of girls' names that I like, but don't know if I would have the balls to use - my family all have very traditional, ordinary names. I like Marina, Beatrice, Emilia...

How about you?

I can't use a lot of my favourite girls names as they've been vetoed by DH...

Susanna(h)
Miriam
Aphra
Kezia(h)
Caroline
Louisa
Martha
Katherine
Jemima
Esther

Happily we seem to agree on boys names!

Babyblues14 · 08/06/2017 11:46

Also wanted aroura after sleeping beauty but dh has said definetly not Sad

happymumof4crazykids · 08/06/2017 11:48

I wanted esme but my OH hated it.

MaroonPencil · 08/06/2017 11:48

Patrick because it doesn't go with our surname
Sam and Edward/Teddy because DH doesn't like them
Linnet because round here it would rhyme with innit

itssquidstella · 08/06/2017 11:55

I've loved the name Oscar since I was 15 and it was still very unusual. Wouldn't use it now as it's risen so much in popularity.

I also have a soft spot for the name Godfrey, but I just don't think I could bring myself to do that to a child!

PonderLand · 08/06/2017 12:08

Martha, Harriet, Beatrice for a girl. I feel like we don't have enough money to use those names, I don't know why I put a class to names Blush

IWantABlueBanana · 08/06/2017 12:12

Callan but it's too similar to our surname so a no go

Notso · 08/06/2017 12:14

Loads of names. Owen, Evan, Jonah, Jude and Bo don't go with our surname.
Clement, Atticus, Lachlan, Gregor, Leroy, Carlton, Digby, Francis, Willoughby, Levi, Cassius and, Axel, Fenton were all vetoed by DH.

For girls Ramona, Missy, Kitty, Olive, Maude, Nell, Lotta, Willa, Karin, Aubrey, Cassidy, Imogen, Iris, Marnie, Pippa, Anna were all a no from DH too.

DarkFloodRises · 08/06/2017 12:19

Alistair - there's a sad story attached to it within my family, and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone by using it
William - vetoed by DH
Summer - vetoed by DH

PersisFord · 08/06/2017 12:21

Hero or Persis. Vetoed. My favourites. Didn't even get them as middle names.

PersisFord · 08/06/2017 12:21

Also Jude - ridiculous with our surname. I discussed changing surname....vetoed!

blahthisistoohard · 08/06/2017 12:30

Isla- way too popular at the moment
Mira- pronounced Meera but too many mistake it for Myra
Willa- already in the family
Effie/Martha/Rosie- vetoed
Aoife/Maeve- not Irish enough to pull off sadly
Elodie/Lottie- just not 'right' for us
Nell/Edie- sound incomplete but love them both

Ciderandskatesdontmix · 08/06/2017 12:31

Tabitha...but too much alliteration with our surname

MsStricty · 08/06/2017 12:32

Mordecai

cuirderussie · 08/06/2017 12:35

Loads of Marthas! I know a baby Martha, it must be on its way back Smile

villainousbroodmare · 08/06/2017 12:36

Hester. Sean (our dog is called Shane).

finnthepink · 08/06/2017 12:37

Rowan for a girl - terrible clash with our surname.
Elizabeth - it's a family name on my side, but we couldn't come up with a NN we were both happy with (it's a long name and is sure to be shortened at some point)
Victoria - DH not a fan
Magda - DH hated it
George - "sounds like a butler" Hmm
Nico - DH hated it!

Tissunnyupnorth · 08/06/2017 12:38

Love the name Chloe. Always wanted the name if I had a DD. When DD was born, even though I pretended otherwise it sounded dreadful with our family surname. Really dreadful. Chose another name. Sad

Comedyusername · 08/06/2017 12:38

Florence because of some dodgy old relative (and we have no girls);
Percy because of the M&S sweets and Thomas the Tank Engine;
Gabriel and Noah because they are "too religious" for my husband;
Harry and Oliver because there are lots;
Will because my brother got there first

NassauBeach · 08/06/2017 12:40

Absolutely love the name Valentina. It makes me swoon I love it so much. But hate the nickname Val which it would definitely be around here Angry

Also Ramona just coz I think she would definitely grow up to be a supercool woman that doesn't put up with any bs. Dh vetoed that.

DawnOfTheMombie · 08/06/2017 12:40

Alice as it's name of my (now ex) DHs exGF. Booooo.

Argeles · 08/06/2017 12:41

Giverny - too wacky for DH

Suri - sounds like something offensive in DH's 1st language

Suranne - same reason as for Suri

finnthepink · 08/06/2017 12:42

Alice as it's name of my (now ex) DHs exGF. Booooo.

Oh yes, forgot that one - it's too outing to say what it is but DH's ex has an uncommon and beautiful name that I've always loved. She is really nice too! But there was no way DH was prepared to name our daughter after his ex Grin

hazeydays14 · 08/06/2017 12:51

Harry because DPs surname is Hill Grin

DP liked Michael, it's his middle name and one of the granddad's names but I had an awful ex with the same name so I just can't live with that

Emily - in my experience every Emily I've known has been an utter cowbag Grin
