Girls name needed with five weeks to go, never wanted to leave it this late but we're finding it very hard.

Would be grateful for thoughts on the below;

  1. Martha
  2. Elodie
  3. Edie
  4. Lois

I like Martha best, followed by Edie.

Not a fan of Elodie (but love the similar Eloise).

Strongly dislike Lois, which is Family Guy and Malcolm in the Middle to me.

Mothervulva · 29/05/2017 11:49

Martha.

Sandsnake · 29/05/2017 11:57

Another vote for Martha or Eddie. Lois to me is also Family Guy! Elodie I dislike - norm entirely sure why though.

blahthisistoohard · 29/05/2017 11:59

Do you think Edie is strong enough as a stand alone name?

BikeRunSki · 29/05/2017 12:01

I like them all, but always think that Elodie is too French if you have no French connections; also that Edie is really an abbreviation of Edith.

29Palms · 29/05/2017 12:05

No, I think giving an abbreviated or diminutive name is short-changing them. You are not naming a child, you are naming a person, and should give a name that will suit them at any age.

Mothervulva · 29/05/2017 12:05

I know a couple of Edies that are just Edie. I think it is a name in its own right now, although it's my least favourite of your choices.

blahthisistoohard · 29/05/2017 12:07

Hmm @29Palms that was exactly my concern, but I don't like Edith. We did think Elodie could be shortened to Edie but I guess it will just become Ellie, which although it's a nice name I really don't want :(.

OP posts:
Mothervulva · 29/05/2017 12:12

I think you can shorten Elodie to Edie.
Funnily enough my DH wanted Edith for one of our daughters, but I said no due to not wanting Edie as a shortening.

Thatextrainch · 29/05/2017 12:16

I prefer Lois

29Palms · 29/05/2017 12:17

Eden
Edwina
Edina
Edna

Probably not to your taste either.

Sophronia · 29/05/2017 12:25

I love Martha, and Lois is ok. Not keen on the other two.

blahthisistoohard · 29/05/2017 12:26

No sorry @29Palms Smile, did consider Eden but I don't think it's quite soft enough for my liking (if that makes sense)

OP posts:
Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/05/2017 12:57

I'd go for Lois, from your list.
Lois Eden.

29Palms · 29/05/2017 13:02

Martha and Lois from your list, then.
I've only ever met one Lois, although it seems to have increasing mentions on here, so may be coming into fashion. I think it's Biblical, like Martha.

Elodie is too frilly for me, and sounds like a chopped-off version of Melody.

smithin · 29/05/2017 17:05

Elodie is lovely

Rockaby · 29/05/2017 19:17

Love Martha. Not mad about any of the others, but Lois and Elodie are ok. Dislike Edie.

Epipgab · 29/05/2017 22:44

I like Edie, not so keen on the others. How about Edana, nn Edie?

Ada
Eloise
Louisa
Melissa

blahthisistoohard · 29/05/2017 23:14

So Martha the favourite?

OP posts:
CocoLoco87 · 29/05/2017 23:29

Martha is my fave, then Edie as nn for Edith

Nonameyet1 · 30/05/2017 08:39

I like Lois, it's pretty and not too popular. Love Edie too.

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/05/2017 08:44

Martha - really pretty. I only know one
young Martha (3yr old)

Elodie - I want to like it, it looks pretty and has a nice sound, but I just find it a bit meh. Plenty love it though

Edie - I like it as a nickname for Edith but not as a stand-alone name

Lois - pretty in an understated way

Martha is my favourite, followed by Lois

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 30/05/2017 14:35

Lois or Martha from your list.
Edie in 4th place. Sorry I just think E D when I hear it.

(Eloise as someone mentioned earlier is cool and pretty).

Pemba · 30/05/2017 14:48

Elodie is lovely
Also like Edie (if short for Eden or Edith)
Martha is OK and I know it's popular but somehow it seems a bit dull
Not that keen on Lois somehow

ThisIsAValidUsername · 30/05/2017 17:51

I really like Lois, it has been on my list for girls for a long time
It's very understated I think

Martha would be second choice
I do know 3 girls names Edie but I think it's better with a full name of Edith.
