Mira

Is Mira (pronounced Meer-ra) too close to Mila (pronounced Mil-la)? They will be cousins (not siblings), just gathering opinions before we contemplate asking SIL!

Not just you Smeaton. I thought of car testing on the A5 too!

Ankleswingers · 23/05/2017 04:24

Nope Shock.
Too similar sounding/ spelling to Myra Hindley.

PetalMettle · 23/05/2017 04:31

I think it's fine as they're such a different sound, and cousins not sisters. I thought of Mira sorovino

lizzieoak · 23/05/2017 04:55

I know a little Mira (pronounced Meer-ah, like meerkats), whose full name is Miriam. I think it's pretty.

Umpteenthnamechange · 23/05/2017 05:11

Mira is an Indian name. And a very old fashioned centuries old type of nene wt that - she was a dancing girl from Indian mythology. Are either of you Indian ?

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 23/05/2017 05:30

It's a nice name BUT...people will say oh that's the shower company isn't it?

lizzieoak · 23/05/2017 06:03

Well, there's Meera Syall and she's not ancient. Mira is also a Hebrew name, so not solely Indian.

SuperBeagle · 23/05/2017 06:42

Really? Not naming a child because in the past there was a killer with the name? As with all time, this killer Myra will be forgotten. The children this Mira grows up will not even know who the killer was probably until they are either close to adulthood or adults.

Would you name your child Adolf? Both distinctive enough names that the association is vivid, where the association with a name like Josef (Stalin) or Rose (West) wouldn't be.

The murders happened in the 60s; people haven't forgotten about it.

HopefullyDothButterNoParsnips · 23/05/2017 06:44

How about Amirah with Mira for short?

Mrsknackered · 23/05/2017 08:52

Mise it's gonna be a pretty long time before Myra Hindley is forgotten. It is now much more in the public eye again because that beast has died.

It's a shame OP because it is a pretty name but yes I also thought Hindley so for that reason would stay clear.

Kazzawazza69 · 23/05/2017 09:03

Mira and Myra are completely different imo, although I personally think Mira and Mila are a bit too similar even for cousins. I like the suggestion of Amira though.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 23/05/2017 09:15

Not too similar no but it is a brand of showers. And I would say it Myra... which, y'know, then leads to the link Hindley, as it's quite unusual.

MamaHanji · 23/05/2017 09:16

Hindley

Joeybee · 23/05/2017 09:16

I'd worry about it being too close to Myra...like Hindley. Actually a lot of people would probably pronounce it Myra.

CowParsleyNettle · 23/05/2017 09:19

Brand of electric shower or serial killer.

Which is a shame as it's a nice name.

savagehk · 23/05/2017 09:25

Shower brand! Amira?

Nicky2468 · 23/05/2017 09:27

Sorry, I thought Myra Hindley too. How about Mya (my-a)?! Knew a lovely girl called that once!

almosttherenow · 23/05/2017 09:29

Hmm mistaking it for Myra seems like a fairly unanimous view. I'm born in the mid-late 80's and the association with Myra wouldn't even have crossed my mind. Also, we are in Australia and I asked someone here and they had never heard of Myra Hindley.

Testing centre on the A5? Haha 😂 Shower brand also wouldn't put me off!

Been toying with this name for a long time, inspired by the Nepalese runner Mira Rai as both myself and my partner are into trail running and I love Nepal.

Just very concerned it is too similar to Mila?

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 23/05/2017 09:31

I love the name Mira. And I actually know a Mira (pronounced Mee-ruh, not mI-ruh)

But DH vetoed it, because of Myra.

I don't think it's too similar to Mila, no. But I personally do prefer Mila, yes.

MamaHanji · 23/05/2017 09:51

I don't think it's too similar to Mila. It is a nice name though despite making me think of Myra.

Lemondrop99 · 23/05/2017 10:11

Myra and Mira are totally different names Hmm

Mira is pretty. However if you're worried about it being too close to Mila, would you consider spelling it Meera? I knew a Meera and always thought her name was lovely. I much prefer that spelling and the pronounciation is obvious.

olderthanyouthink · 23/05/2017 10:24

To me mira is pronounced Myra and it's the shower brand

Meera is a game of thrones character

I've no idea who Myra hindley is, I'm 21 and English. (Just googled her, lovely woman) I know kids google each other's name to see what comes up and can take the piss of the results but unless you have the same/similar surname I doubt it would be a problem.

Puffpaw · 23/05/2017 10:25

Sounds like an operating system to me

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/05/2017 10:51

How about Mia !😀

harderandharder2breathe · 23/05/2017 10:55

Well my first thought was a lovely child I know called Mira (pronounced how you are not Myra). I've never once though of Myra Hindley in relation to Mira either!
