Dot as middle name - too much like a URL?!

We are just working on our shortlist of names and my husband is really keen on Dot after his nan for a middle name. Although it does sound cute on its own, as soon as you add a surname into the mix it just sounds like an email address to me!! E.G Phoebe Dot Surname......@gmail.com!

Sorry I think she will get bullied with this middle name for the reasons you mention.

I should add that I have suggested we use her full name Dorothy instead, but she has always been know as Dot so he finds it much more meaningful and sentimental.

My MiL was known as Dot and that was just fine - it's cute.
But her name in full was of course Dorothy, so why not go for that and call your DD Dot when you refer to her middle name?

Why not Dorothy? And you can say dot at home but she will have a proper middle name and can decide if she wants Dot later.

Why would she use a nickname for her middle name? A middle name is mostly written down, rather than used verbally?

This really made me giggle for some reason. Dot is a lovely name but I do think she would sound like an email address so Dorothy is probably better

People do use shortened middle names, eg Sarah Louise might get called Sarah Lou. John Joseph becomes John Jo.

Lots of people prefer to use their middle names anyway, so I'd definitely go with Dorothy.

This was the exact reason we ruled out dot as a middle name.

So she would have had to say;
Firstname dot D O T dot [email protected] to avoid saying
Firstname dot Dot dot [email protected]

It made us laugh but we figured it would get annoying

Its quite common round here as loads of boys are called after their Dad, they end up using the middle name as their known name which gets shortened.
I often call my kids their name along with shortened middle name waltons style as a nn eg Finn-Tom (not real name)

I think it's really cute as a middle name. I wouldn't worry about the email issue but perhaps you could give her two middle names. Everyone overthinks middle names which is pointless as no one uses them. I'm in my fifties but have never used my middle name in an email address. You are worrying about a non issue.

I've worked in 7 places in total and two of them used my middle name in my email address so certainly a risk. I wouldn't do it personally

You are right, sorry I didn't explain it well. I meant that people don't use their middle name in conjunction with their first name. I actually use my middle name quite often as my first name is difficult to spell.

As for companies using middle names in email addresses . If you have two middle names then I bet they would just use one. So not an issue.

I'd go with Dorothy for the reason you've already mentioned in your op.

I've met at least one person who shortened her middle name - she was known as Laura Jo (and that wasn't the full name on her birth certificate).
