Does anyone know if there is an online resource or something where people feedback on their experiences living with their own name?

For example, I'm loving the name Gabriel and it tends to get mostly positive feedback online.

But I stumbled across this website

www.behindthename.com/name/gabriel/comments

where (while lots of people say they like it), there are 3 Gabriels who say living with the name was hard. Anything from getting bullied about having a 'girly' name, or Gay-briel, through to people constantly mishearing Gabe as Dave or whatever.

I know Gabriel isn't the most common name (which is one reason I like it) but it's still an established name and I don't think it's girly. The 'gay' thing is a risk but children can twist anything they want, and if it's not the name, they'll pick on hair colour or whatever. Can also hope that we might be moving towards a time when gay isn't used as an insult....

Anyway, the fact that men with this name disliked it has made me wobble. That said I know it's a small sample size and anyone could dislike their name. These men also might not be in the UK, which could have an affect (I think the website is mostly American). There are also two Gabriels who said they liked their name!

Does anyone know if there's any other way I can find out how people with a particular name feel about it? I don't want to inflict my child with a name he'll hate.

People are more likely to fill those things in if they are unhappy though so it's not a true reflection. I'm not keen on my name purely because I can't say it without lisping Blush

I don't know if one but it's a great idea. Someone could make a fortune with an app doing that!!!

I was going to call DS Gabriel, saw that site and changed my mind.. was gutted as I loved the name. Also had very negative reactions from family. But some of those comments made me feel I could be saddling him with a burden.

Mumma, that is true. That's why I always take reviews with a ounce of salt as people are more motivated to complain but likely to stay quiet when happy. I quite like my name, but it's never occurred to me to go on the internet and state that!

Awww that's a shame Womble. I'm not discussing names with anyone except DH as I don't want to be influenced others opinions. Once I decide on a name, friends and family will just have to get used to it. I know they won't bully him, so I'm not as worried what they think. What strangers/kids at school think are more of a concern as they are more likely to be nasty about it - so it's good to hear that Navy's son hasn't had any negativity.

I mean not discussing with anyone in real life who will know my son

Gabriel's a lovely name, OP and being smitten with this Irish charmer for years in no way colours my judgement Wink

Ha, I was watching a (terrible) movie the other night with Gabriel Byrne in!

There also appears to be a Brazilian football player with Arsenal called Gabriel, which must up the cool factor of the name among teenagers at the moment (probably won't be relevant for my son though)

Thanks all, feeling a bit better about the name now. You want to pick a name you like, but also hope your child will like (or at least not actively hate) it.
