Unusual Names with meaning

Daisydaisy17 · 30/04/2017 20:47

I'm looking for suggestions for either boys or goths names with some meaning.

I like to be a bit different so after 17 plus years of trying for a baby I'd like a make with some meaning.

Anyone have any ideas?

The meaning of those names should be correct, but I'm not 100% certain. These are some of the names on our list...:

Yaron: he that is going to sing/rejoice (or something like that... Blush)
Arik: derived from Ariel, God's Lion
Torquil: Thor's cauldron
Elric: according to behindthename either noble ruler or elf ruler
Ulrik: apparently means prosperity and power
Betram: bright raven

Láilá/Laila: Sami/Scandi form of Helga: blessed
Lettice: Joy
Selena: moon
Nektaria: nectar
Greta: pearl
Tuva: Apparently, according to the internet derived from Thor and beautiful...
Arielle: female version of Ariel

I also like Apolline.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/05/2017 08:40

Apolline is lovely, could be Polly.
I also like Aquillina, meaning 'she knows', it's Spanish.(Lily/Lina).
Tuva is nice.
Love Ulric and Elric.
Someone suggested Ula/Ulla, the other day, it's an Irish name, meaning sea pearl. I think it's rather lovely !

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 01/05/2017 10:08

Sugar

Aww, thanks :) I really like Grania, btw! If we had any kind of Irish connection...

Oh yes, Ulla/Ula is very nice, I agree :) Ulla is also Scandi. According to behindthename (an in my expererience surprisingly accurate baby names website...) it derives from either Ulrika, Hulda or Ursula. All interesting names with meaning.

I agree, Aquilina is really lovely! We actually have an Aquilina mentioned our family records (if you go back faaar.... She was meant to marry a male ancestor of mine but she married someone else, because they thaught he was dead. So he married her sister...).

I didn't know about the Spanish meaning, so cool :) In Italian Aquila means eagle and Aquilina means little eagle or eagly like (naso aqulino, eagle nosed...)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/05/2017 12:05

Hi Shark, loving the little story of Aquilina, and your ancestor, marrying her sister. 😄
I much prefer the Italian meaning, little eagle.
OP, I also like Golda, meaning gold, of course. The origins apparently, are either English, or Yiddish !

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 02/05/2017 15:58

Hi Sugar :)

I've also always been fascinated by it (I mean... I wonder what the different people involved thought whilst this was happening...)

Golda is really coold. I kind of wonder if the OP is still here and if yes, what s/he is thinking ;)

FluffyBathTowel · 02/05/2017 16:31

I like Merryn for a girl. It means joyful.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/05/2017 19:45

Seen anything you like Daisy ? 😄

bridgetreilly · 02/05/2017 23:22

Hephzibah: my delight is in her

OlennasWimple · 02/05/2017 23:27

Almost all names have a meaning, OP. Is there something more specific you are after?

QuietNameChange · 02/05/2017 23:33

Beatrix: blessed
Donata: given/gifted
Donato: male version. Maybe more of a middle name....
Isidora: gift of Isis
Theodora: gift of god
Theodore: also gift of god
Honor
Aaron: mountain of strength (maybe?)
Frederick: Peaceful ruler
Nicholas/Klaus: Victory of the people
Victory
Victoire

PirateQueenie · 02/05/2017 23:48

The only advice I'd give is don't get overly carried away with meaning, and choose something that sounds lovely. I know someone who called their daughter (I'm not sure of the spelling) Fear. It apparently means something in Irish like wild or something. But the whole family always say how all they think of is phobia when they hear it 😕 I personally think it would have been an okay middle name but the poor girl!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 03/05/2017 02:00

For a girl:

  • Lucia (graceful light)
  • Celeste/ Celestine (heavenly)
  • Mireya (miracle)

For a boy:

  • Jesse (blessing)
  • Aaron (miraculous)

Flowers Congratulations, btw!
What a beloved baby she/ he will be, after 17 long years of trying...

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 03/05/2017 02:03

^^ (Sorry, didn't spot that Quiet had already mentioned "Aaron"!).
