It looks like our little one will be a girl, and we're struggling a bit with names. On the list so far:

Sophia
Vera
Maria

Must work in English and Russian, surname similar to Mikhailova.

Any ideas? What else might we like?

Anastasis! I was always captivated by that Anastasia story, thought maybe I was her.

millymae · 30/04/2017 19:43

I think Vera would be perfect with a surname like that - imho anything longer would be such a mouthful.
Vera is a lovely name - go for it.

EssentialHummus · 30/04/2017 20:09

That's interesting milly, it's gotten very mixed reviews on here before (from "Lovely" to "It's the wrong kind of old lady name").

I would avoid Sophia as I know a few polish people recently who have had Sophia's, for the reason that it works in both!

Mummamayhem · 30/04/2017 20:11

Vera is cute!

EssentialHummus · 30/04/2017 20:13

mrs it is very popular in Russia at the moment - a friend who is a teacher says that one in five is a Sophia. Not sure how much it'll affect us in south London, but still.

Anya works well as does Natalia or Elena.
I too was captivated by the Anastasia story so love that too.
Vera works with Russian heritage/surname for me but is vera duckworth & old lady otherwise

I'm trying to convince DH that we can have Maria with the nn Mia, because the normal short form (Masha) sounds quite ugly to me in English.

Natalia
Rosa (does that work?)
Anna/Anya (I think sounds good with surname)

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 30/04/2017 23:00

I love the name Vera. I actually wanted to be named Vera when I was little (primary school)... My sister has a friend called Vera, she's a really lovely young woman and suits the name very well imo.

These may work for you (but I'm not 100% certain, tbh):

Kyra
Milena
Marina
Natalya
Darya
Yelena
Katerina
Natasha
Susanna
