Did you choose a name that was a bit random compared to everything else you had in mind?

We hadn't given much thought to girls names as I'm so convinced we're having a boy but we talked about it over the last few weeks (am now 28 weeks so want to settle on at least a couple of options). I really love all the old lady names like Ivy, Lillian etc. My top two were violet and Florence, DH likes both but doesn't love them. We also both like Matilda I have quite an unusual name and really don't want to chose something v popular which I think all these names are or will be in the case of Violet.

Another random name that came up is Piper, we both really like it but my only concern is that it is so different to the very feminine, quite old fashioned names that I've like for ages and that I'll regret it. Did anyone else chose a bit of a "curveball" name? Are you glad you did?

I like quite traditional names. My list was full of names like Alice, Harriet, Rosalind. Our daughter is called Thea.

I quite like Piper but how about Pippa or Philippa nn Pippa instead? It's still uncommon but doesn't feel out of place next to the other traditional names you like for future children. That's the only thing about choosing a "curveball" name - would you want any future children's names to match it in terms of modernness/quirkiness? Because you might struggle if your other favourites are all so different.

My DD has an unusual but old name. Some of my other favourites are even more unusual/out there, some are quite popular/classic, but I think we could go in either direction as her name is quite simple and well-known.

I looooooooove pippa! Totally gutted that it is slang in many European countries for all sorts! Just a Thought

I really like Pippa too but DH and I are exactly the same age and both of us just think of Pippa who ran the caravan park in home and away! We have a lot of European friends so good to know about the slang! One thing I liked about Piper is that Pip is a good nickname that we both like.

I had a huge list of lovely, quite unusual / borderline 'trendy' names for DD1, but actually ended up with a classic name, which is fairly unusual among babies, (I've never met another baby with this name), but is more popular among women my age, (though none of my friends happen to have it). It's been fairly well used throughout history, so not a trendy name at all. I'm really glad we chose it, as I think it is less likely to date.

DH and I are TTC DC2 now and I would like to choose a similar classic sort of name.

I can't comment for myself as I haven't even had my first yet but of the names you listed, I actually prefer Piper. Matilda and Florence are slightly middle class cliché names (sorry) and if you've grown up with an unusual name yourself and loved it (so did I), you'll want the same for your child. I agree Piper is a different genre but it's not a clash with your usual taste. For example, I could imagine sisters called Violet and Piper.

My DH's was Angelo, Ricardo and Kai....
He's a Roman!

For our first the list was Rudy, Shiloh, Tadgh.
He ended up with a name in the top 10
