Bligh. I saw it after watching the programme MutinyHaloI love it, but worried it's too strange.

Also would it be even stranger to use it for a girl when it is a boys (though very uncommon) name? Or should i just forget it all together?

I far prefer Blythe.

Wikky · 03/04/2017 16:20

Captain Bligth was ok as a captain for the times. He wasn't known as a particularly cruel captain.

thanks for the feedback!!! Any other suggestions like this name (other than Blythe?) For some reason i love names like Bligh, Blake, Blair for a girl?Hmm

He probably was an ok captain, but the legend around him makes him a sadist flogger.

pilates · 03/04/2017 17:18

Sorry I do not like it.

Wikky · 03/04/2017 17:35

Blair is a bit Blair witch.

Blake is ok. It sounds like a name.

Captain Bligh was actually Admiral Bligh. He is often portrayed as a cruel bastard in films etc as it makes for a better story but he really wasn't.

HERE is a Radio Times article saying the same thing

I think my favorite of your choices is Bligh. Smile

Gallavich · 03/04/2017 17:39

Bligh is just...so bad. Blake and Blair are both pretty bad too.

squoosh · 03/04/2017 18:10

I think Blair is the best of your Bl names. The only other ones I can think of are Blodwyn ( how ugly is that?) or Blaise who I think was a male saint.

buttercup54321 · 03/04/2017 23:42

Blythe. Probably not for a boy though

Rockaby · 04/04/2017 08:16

I don't like the sound Blake. It's too much like bleak to me and is just an unattractive sound. I prefer Bligh to that.

Objectively, ignoring any associations with Tony, witches and the fact it's usually a surname, the sound of Blair is really nice I think. A bit like claire but without the c, it's a softer sound.

How about Bridy (short for Bridget)?

ClaryBeanHorshAndMe · 04/04/2017 08:22

I really like Blaise. Very Blaise Pascal (although I do think I actually prefer the name for a boy...).

Blair is nice as well. So is Blythe.

Bryn?

Pemba · 04/04/2017 09:02

So after Captain Bligh the evil captain in Mutiny of the Bounty? Well he was evil in all the films, anyway! And definitely a man. And it's his surname anyway.

I don't understand how you think that makes a nice name for a child, least of all for a girl.

Like pps say, even though also a surname, Blythe is a bit better and more customarily used as a first name (doesn't Gwyneth Paltrow's mother have this name?) and has a pleasant meaning too. But most surname type names sound very masculine (except Piper, Paige and Blythe). Blake is definitely very masculine.

Queensparkles · 07/04/2017 00:25

I love Blair for a girl! (Reminds me of Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl)

AbernathysFringe · 07/04/2017 00:29

I thought Bligh was the sadistic Captain? Let me guess, did they make a series based on some different take on a true story? Maybe google original story first and see if that puts you off.
It's only one letter away from Blight too.

MommaGee · 07/04/2017 00:33

? Then Bly for a NN?

Never heard the name. Does it sound like It's spelt? If it is,it sounds like a noise you make in your throat, sorry!

I literally only joined as I saw this on line and I wanted to say call your baby what the hell you like so long as it's not iffensuve. Give them a middle name as a back up in case they hate their actual name but you will find it will be accepted as their name and who wants to be samey anyway. I have 2 unusual names and the only ones with those names in a school of 630 pupils and that makes them feel special individual and proud. I worried a bit so gave them a middle names just in case but they are who they are and have never known anything different. Be brave and don't worry about anyone elses opinions. Grin
