So DP and I are expecting our first (32 weeks) and we have argued over names since the beginning. He likes Gaelic names and I'm not as keen. However, we were watching the Gilmore Girls and he decided that the best name that he has ever heard is Lorelai and has his heart set on it. I really wanted Lily, but he won't budge! He hates Lily and no other suggestions take his fancy. I don't not like Lorelai but it's not my favourite, however he's picked a lot worse, so this seems to be the best one thus far; what are your opinions on the name?Confused

It was on my list for DD, as Lorelei, but I was rather put off by the myth of the mermaids/sirens who lured sailors to their death.

I didn't know it was pronounced Lorel-eye. Not keen sorry.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/03/2017 06:10

Not keen at all.

Lily may be over used but it's classic and pretty. I don't like the other name - no idea how to say it or spell it and it doesn't look as pretty as Lily

I do think it's a lovely name but in with you! 28 weeks and we're calling our little girl Lily 😊
Yes it's common and 'boring' apparently but from someone who has grown up with an unusual name, common names are so much better and I hate having to spell my name to every single person who asks for it!

mathanxiety · 19/03/2017 06:17

What's wrong with your H that he won't compromise on names?

Fwiw, I think Lorelei is a nice name, but he can't bulldoze you like that.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/03/2017 07:53

Just no.
OP, this should be a joint decision, time to go back to the drawing board !

OpalIridescence · 19/03/2017 14:12

I have a Lorelei, it really suits my daughter.

Reactions are generally positive although we do have to spell it to people and it is occasionally pronounced incorrectly.

My daughter's nickname at the moment is Lolly but the name offers grown up nicknames like Lori when she is older.

Funnily, I expected Gilmore Girls comments, but often people associate it with the opera or pop song.

If you like a name you should go for it, kids especially just accept names.

However if you don't love it don't do it!

Lorelai is beautiful. Lorraine? Laura?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 21/03/2017 22:45

Um what's this 'he's not budging' business? You don't have to say, 'At least I don't dislike it' and just give up. This is your DD too, you'll have to stand up for her more than once during her childhood so start with this.
Fwiw it so happens I like Lorelei and Lily but it's for both of you to decide!

crapfatbanana · 21/03/2017 23:01

Lorelai is a bit frilly for me but Lori is cute.

Lily gets my vote. It's popular for a reason.

Or what about Laurence?

mathanxiety · 22/03/2017 04:00

I know a Laura Leigh, no hyphen, and both names are used...
