Harriet/Harri

Due our 3rd DD. DH has always wanted to call a DS Harry, for his grandad. It's unlikely we'll have more DC so thinking about Harriet. Honest opinions please! How common/popular is it?

Others that have popped to my mind are:
Charlotte
Polly
Pixie (3 yo DD suggested it but I think I like it!)
Lily

"Due our 3rd DD. DH has always wanted to call a DS Harry, for his grandad"

I really dislike this idea, I'm afraid. You are setting her up to feel that you are disappointed she wasn't a boy. Using it as a middle name is more subtle and less likely to lead to this type of feeing.

I'm an Angharad but called Harri, I know a few others who's nicknamed the same (popular in Wales!)
I'm slightly biased saying I love it Grin

Elllicam · 26/02/2017 07:05

I also love Angharad, if we were Welsh it would have been on our list too. Otherwise I like Harriet and Charlotte. Would you be using Harri as a nickname for Charlotte too?

I'm an Angharad who is called Harri by all my friends. I love it as a nickname and Harriet is a lovely name :)

sycamore I do kind of get what you're saying but that couldn't be further from the truth. It was our number one boys name for DD1 due to the family link but never thought of Harriet for a girl instead. Dh is actually relieved it's a girl as "I know what I'm doing with girls now" Grin definitely no disappointment. Just thought it might be a nice way to honour his grandad.

But anyway, despite the overall positivity from you lot DH says he doesn't think he likes Harriet!! I've mentioned pixie to my mum and a couple of friends and they all love it but think it may be too cutesy! Charlotte would be Charlie I think.

I love Harriet and the possible nicknames are great too! Really not a fan of Lily and I hate Pixie I'm afraid. I don't mean to sound harsh but it almost seems cruel to call a child Pixie! She has to take that name through life with her!
I do like Charlotte to. Very pretty.

Good luck!

I agree. What about when she's 40? And if she isn't gamine and petite? Use it as a family nickname, maybe?

FraterculaArctica · 28/02/2017 08:51

I'm a Harriet (never been Harri or any other shortening) and I love it, if that helps! Hate Pixie though - that's not a name!

MrsMarigold · 02/03/2017 14:37

My DM has a friend called Pixie she is in her seventies and it's never held her back.

I've got a Harriet. Love the name. I thought we'd shorten to Hattie or Hettie but she's Harriet.
I also like Charlotte, good option for nn with Lottie or Charlie. The fact it's been used for Princess Charlotte would put me off for some reason.
If DS had been DD he would have been Elizabeth nn Betty

datingbarb · 02/03/2017 17:14

Harriet is lovely and really like Harry as nickname rather than Hattie
