Alba or Besiana

Hi - both of these names are pretty normal for girls names in my country but I was wondering if either sounded better (or terrible) to UK ears as we live in the UK.

  • Alba
  • Besiana

I prefer Besiana but would love your thoughts.

Thanks.

Alba!!! I wanted to name our daughter Alba but husband banged on about dodgy video recorders... I will try again if we have another. It's my favourite girls name.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 07/02/2017 09:52

I think Alba is really cute, it's the name of the Grandma in Jane the Virgin, I remember wondering why no one was calling their babies Alba, it's great!

zukiecat · 07/02/2017 12:12

I like both names

Besiana is unusual and very pretty, and Alba is the Gaelic name for Scotland (Yes I'm Scottish)

I do tend to like names that end in "A"

I would quite happily name another DD either name

JRoo · 07/02/2017 12:17

Flora is fab. This would definitely be my choice!
Alba is pretty and unusual.
Dislike Besiana and like another PP it makes me think bestial.

BroomstickOfLove · 07/02/2017 12:28

I like both of the names. Alba sounds more mainstream English, while Besiana is noticeably foreign and unusual, but that's not a bad thing.

I think Flora is lovely!
Also like Alba (means Scotland in Gaelic which is nice 😀)

katherine775 · 07/02/2017 17:45

I like Alba. Both would be considered fairly unusual here, but besiana more so. ❤ :)

Kazzawazza69 · 07/02/2017 21:56

I really like Alba and Flora. Besiana sounds nice but the spelling bothers me for some reason. Could you spell it Bessiana?

MummaGiles · 07/02/2017 21:59

Alba! I love Alba! If DS had been a girl I wanted to use that name in some way (whether first or middle name).

MrsEricBana · 07/02/2017 22:00

I love both Alba and Flora (prefer Alba, just lovely). No to Besiana from me too, sorry.

TimidLividyetagain · 07/02/2017 22:06

Alba for Scotland and also works in Spanish do for me pretty much perfect.
Besiana is okay but not more foreign sounding for the u.k. but if I loved both I'd use both. Alba Besiana and your surname. I have an Anna-lucia .

mathanxiety · 08/02/2017 02:01

There are lots of names that might yield the NN Ana, and the full name Ana too. Besiana is imo too close to 'bestial' when you glance at it written down, as a pp has said.

Alba is lovely.

Flora would be very nice - the margarine is irrelevant.

CaptainCabinets · 09/02/2017 03:23

Alba Besiana is a beautiful name.

I know a lovely Albanian family with a DD named Arberie, which I think is just gorgeous.

Flora is also fabulous.

LarkDescending · 09/02/2017 17:46

I love Flora. Is Floreta a possibility?

BrainSaysNo · 09/02/2017 17:49

Albanian?
Besiana- Besa is cute short (I am going to have), and great meaning!

GeorgeTheHamster · 09/02/2017 22:07

Ana is fine as a nickname as long as your surname doesn't begin with L. If there is another Anna at nursery then the staff will write her name as Ana L on her scribbles masterpieces.

Bringbacksummer · 09/02/2017 22:57

I prefer Alba. I don't massively love either though, just not to my taste.

mycavitiesareempty · 09/02/2017 23:40

I would go for Alba as I think Besiana might well get shortened. I like Lule but I have no idea how this sounds in Alb. Is it a granny name?!?!

nooka · 10/02/2017 02:41

I think if you like Besiana best you should go for it. If you live in an area with a good ethnic mix no one is going to have an issue with either name. If your child wants an 'ordinary' English name at some point then she has the option of Ana/Anna/Ann or Bess/Bessie/Betsy.
