What could Jed me short for?

I overheard the name Jed for a boy recently and really quite like it. I know it's a stand alone name but it seems a bit nick-namey to me and I prefer longer names. Can anyone think of a name it could be short for? or a nickname for?

thanks!

Edward?

NightWanderer · 01/02/2017 04:16

My cousin is Jed short for Jeremy.

Moonywormtailpadfootprongs · 01/02/2017 04:17

Jedediah

I have a cousin called Gerrard, his nickname is Jed.

Thurlow · 01/02/2017 04:30

In the West Wing it's short for Josiah

Mclaren37 · 01/02/2017 04:32

Ooh I quite like Gerard. Ged would be a nice spelling too. Not quite so keen on Jedediah.

The only Jed I have heard of is Jed Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies.

BigGreenOlives · 01/02/2017 04:43

Gerald

minmooch · 01/02/2017 06:24

Short for Edmund

CPtart · 01/02/2017 06:25

I know a Ged, 11, short for Gerard.

2cats2many · 01/02/2017 06:27

Jedward?

youarenotkiddingme · 01/02/2017 06:31

It could be short for Jeremy. But I think you'd have to guide that one!

Afreshstartplease · 01/02/2017 06:32

Dammit I came on to say jedward

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/02/2017 06:36

I think Ged might get different pronounciations. I'd stay with the Jed spelling. I only know one when he was a little boy, he must be almost 30 now. He was just Jed not short for anything.

EccentricPickle · 01/02/2017 06:37

Grin Jedward! Some people have been watching too much Celebrity Big Brother! 😂

I like Jeremy or Jared.

pinkhorse · 01/02/2017 06:55

It just makes me think of Jedward!! 😂

GrumpySausage · 01/02/2017 06:58

I love Jed. I always think it is short for Jedidiah.

JC23 · 01/02/2017 07:02

I would think Jeremy.
Jared is nice.

Eggsbutnobacon · 01/02/2017 07:19

I know a Jed, short for Jeremy.

Pipilangstrumpf · 01/02/2017 09:39

I'd think Gerald

NataliaOsipova · 01/02/2017 09:42

It is (was) pretty common name in Liverpool and around, I think. I know a couple of men called Ged and it's short for Gerard.

As a pp said, though, in the West Wing, President Bartlet was Jed - short for Josiah.
