Don't like it sorry. I'm not keen on surnames as names.

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 15/12/2016 16:30

Girl or boy?

There's a Spencer in Pretty Little Liars, it suits her.

Earlgreywithmilk · 15/12/2016 16:31

My bil is called spencer and I really like it although I found it unusual at first. He does get called 'spen' for short tho.

DollieDino · 15/12/2016 16:33

All names can be surnames? I really wouldn't put Spencer as an obvious surname like Stevenson or Williamson, etc. are...

For a boy!

Good pants. Food to go mediocre.

Normandy144 · 15/12/2016 16:39

I quite like it, but then I don't mind surnames as names. Having spent some time living in North America I've got used to it, quite like Parker or Hudson for example. It seems less acceptable in the UK for some reason. If you like it go for it.

You might find it shortened to Spence if that bothers you. Oh and there's a Spencer in Made in Chelsea who seems somewhat of a ladies man, but I don't think that's a reason to avoid.

Fantastic hockey club in SW London Grin. Good name too.

LaundryQueenHatesIroning · 15/12/2016 16:42

DH wanted to call our DS Spencer. I liked it but I was worried people would think he was named after the reality tv guy so ultimately vetoed it

Vixxfacee · 15/12/2016 16:42

I like it.

pinkblink · 15/12/2016 16:44

I like it, was on my shortlist

Mombie2016 · 15/12/2016 16:46

DNeph is Spencer, I love it Xmas Grin

Chocolatecake12 · 15/12/2016 16:50

The 2 Spencer's I know are horrid little shits - sorry but it makes me hate the name!
However you have to go with what you and your partner like - it's nice to get opinions but it's your choice - if you liked it that much you would just use it and not care what everyone else thought.

BadToTheBone · 15/12/2016 17:31

I know a few either first or surname and they all get Spen without fail, in fact I know a family of 4 Spencers and they all get Spen, even the mum, so if you like that too, go for it.

DappledThings · 15/12/2016 17:57

Friend A had a Spencer. I mentioned it to Friend B who said, " Why have they called him that? Do they want him to be an estate agent?"

So that's one opinion.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/12/2016 18:00

Not for a boy. I definitely think of it as a girls name.

DollieDino · 15/12/2016 18:01

Spencer is not a girls name GrinGrinGrin

BreatheDeep · 15/12/2016 18:07

There is a female Spencer in Pretty Little Liars and a male Spencer in Made in Chelsea. That would put me off as I watch both. But otherwise it's a fine name.

milky85 · 15/12/2016 18:10

I agree, Spencer isn't a girls' name. Just because someone named their daughter it, doesn't make it unisex - the same for Elliot, James, etc.

Spencer reminds me of Criminal Minds - which I absolutely adore, so go for it!

Sophronia · 15/12/2016 19:40

I know one who goes by Spenny!

EssentialHummus · 15/12/2016 19:45

Good pants. Food to go mediocre.

What?

I'm not a fan - it's estate agent or MiC for me.

Pluto30 · 15/12/2016 20:10

I can't help seeing it as a unisex name now, because I've been watching Pretty Little Liars for so long, and the Spencer (girl) in that is awesome.

I don't mind it for a boy though.

TronaldDump · 15/12/2016 20:14

Ha Dappled I came on to say it's an estate agent's name! Although I do have very conservative taste in names OP, and if I met one I'd reserve judgment.

What about Sebastian instead?

Strokethefurrywall · 16/12/2016 15:40

My DBro was named Spencer (he died a few years back) and DS1 has Spencer as a middle name.

I love it obviously. Both my DS's have surnames for first names (as does DH) so it's definitely not weird for us.

It's always a yes from me, can't have enough Spencers' in the world Grin
