Lourdas?

Hi all.
We're deciding on baby names and for a girl we were thinking of lourdas and would be Lou-lou for short.
It's our favourite place in the world a little island in kefalonia in Greece.
What do you think?!?!

I know quite a few girls called Lourdes, and none get called Lard Ass so I don't see why Lourdas would be. Confused

I would, however, probably think it was just Lourdes spelled incorrectly.

Maybe have it as a middle name if it's a special place for you.

Somersetlady · 23/10/2016 18:39

Would have been lard arse in our school!

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 23/10/2016 19:32

It would definitely be rude if you already had a baby called this, but in the hypothetical...not so much.

It's lovely that you want a name that has great meaning to you and from a place that holds such fond memories but I do agree with pp's in that it's not particularly practical

BikeRunSki · 23/10/2016 19:42

My middle name is my dad's favourite place. It is unusual, spelt oddly and difficult to pronounce. I am so glad it is my middle name.

FuckThatToOneSide · 23/10/2016 20:16

No.

GinIsIn · 23/10/2016 20:37

waitrose has it really never occurred to you that 99.9% of people that this child meets in its life will be strangers, and therefore will probably judge just as this bunch of strangers on the internet have?! It would be splendid if life were entirely sunshine and roses and fairies at the bottom of the garden so your attitude is very naive and simplistic.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 23/10/2016 20:44

Great name.

Go for it.

LynetteScavo · 23/10/2016 20:47

Is it Law-das? Confused

Massey1990 · 24/10/2016 07:11

Yes it is law-dad which is why lard-ass hadn't accused to me x

OP posts:
Massey1990 · 24/10/2016 07:12

Law-das sorry

Fenella we must mix in very different circles (thank goodness!!!) As I say my Daughter has a name that Mumsnet would not approve of...she's 9 now and no one has ever been rude about it, adult or child. In fact quite the opposite.
My own name is shared by only 7 other people in the country. Again, never had a rude comment.
I'm sorry you live in such a negative area Sad

DocMcFanjo · 24/10/2016 11:08

I know a Lourda which always thought a pretty name. Might that be a safer compromise?

LetitiaCropleysCookbook · 24/10/2016 11:15

That's a brilliant suggestion! Combined with a middle name beginning with S, maybe? Think Lourda S(imone), for example!

BadToTheBone · 24/10/2016 11:18

I know you really want everyone to like it, but people are giving their opinions and that's what you asked for. Just because it isn't exactly pronounced lard ass doesn't mean that's not what is conjures up for most.

If you go for it, be prepared for your child to potentially hate it.

Puremince · 24/10/2016 11:20

It looks like a misspelling of Lourdes to me.

SirChenjin · 24/10/2016 11:47

Waitress - given the number of people on here who share Fenella's view, I don't think you need to express any PA sympathy for the kind of area she lives in.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/10/2016 11:50

I like it OP.

Massey1990 · 24/10/2016 12:07

BadToTheBone of course I want it to be liked, it's a name myself and my husband like but ultimately it will be our decision just think it's good to get strangers views on it rather than family as they will love what ever we choose! I don't think my daughter will get bullied for a name weight give her but we will also teach her that it is not okay to redicule someone on the name they have been given. Thank you to all that have given constructive criticism about the name and it has given us some to think about. Those that have been rude and no not the lard ass comments I'm not that petty but those saying it's a 'fucking horrible name' shame on you for thinking that's okay to talk to another adult like!

waitrose - I too am very glad we mix in different circles. And I quite like living here in the real world, where people have things like common sense, so I'm afraid if you thought to offend me you've somewhat missed the mark!

Sadly most people have to mix with a vast array of different demographics and backgrounds and can't all live in a little fluffy sheltered bubble like you. It is therefore handy not to furnish them with a name that will subject them to ridicule from 98% of the population. Hope that clarifies things for you, do let me know if you wish me to use smaller words.....

GinIsIn · 24/10/2016 12:40

And for the record, Waitrose - you may wish to RTFT and you will note I was not one of the 'rude' posters, just trying to point out that in an ideal world people wouldn't be ridiculed for their names, however we don't live in an ideal world, why not spare your child the bother and upset..... Hmm

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 24/10/2016 13:06

Fenella I did not wish to be rude. Unlike you.
I don't live in a fluffy bubble, I live a life where I give people respect and love and generally get it back.
Your attitude is just horrible and you are so defensive. I've given you examples you have chosen to ignore-instead you've gone on some strange attack. I can't really begin to understand why. I shan't indulge it, sorry.

tonsiltennis · 24/10/2016 13:14

Op the only way you're going to pull this off is if you have a mega Greek surname. Then it's obvious that you've chosen it for its Greek origins, rather than Madge-love.

So if it's Lourdas Oppodopoulis, OK. Lourdas Tyrebuck, not so much.

Hellochicken · 24/10/2016 13:26

Lour-da sounds nice.

But I would assume you wanted to copy Madonna but got the spelling wrong. Also as pp said if people read it without asking for pronunciation it looks like "lawd ass"

In real life I probably wouldnt tell you this. Honest opinion don't do it. Go back to drawing board. If you do, the least bad option (IMO) use it as middle name and spell it Lourda

Or think of something else . . . Laura. Louisa. Lauren. Lara.

GinIsIn · 24/10/2016 13:43

Right then waitrose. If that's what you think. I shall leave you to the kittens and the fairies. Interesting that you should mention attack when the only one calling other posters horrible people etc has been you....
