Orla or Rose

I always loved Orla - DH didn't. He liked Rose. I grew to love it.

Now he has done a U-turn on Orla, and we've tentatively named DD3 (due in a few weeks) Orla Florence. I'm not 100% sure about Florence but I think it works well.

But DDs, totally of their own accord, keep saying we should call the baby 'Rose'. They have no idea about any of the names we have considered. It is making me reconsider the name! Not sure what the middle name would be.

NOT Orla Rose (which is pretty - but we have a good friend with a DD called a very very similar thing - first name begins with 'I' and is v close to Orla, and middle name is Rose - I think it would be weird).

Thoughts?

I love both Orla and Rose

chattygranny · 22/10/2016 08:21

I love them both and think Florence as a middle name goes well with either as its length balances the short forenames. If I have to vote I'd say Rose just in that Orla is slightly trendier so may date more. I know 2 little Orlas.

I like Orla
I know one and it's spelt the Irish way, Orlaith

finova · 22/10/2016 10:26

Just a thought why not go for Orla Florence Rose?

OrlasMummy · 22/10/2016 23:13

Our dd is Orla and we often get compliments on her name. If you like Irish names you might like Roise - means Rose and is pronounced Rocha, like John Rocha. Rose is lovely too.

Or Orlaith Roisin (Orla Rosheen).

On popularity, Orla isn't in the top 100 in England or England/Wales - Rose is 64th in England (with Rosie higher up). Doesn't worry me too much, though, as my DD1 has a v popular name once you add up all the spellings of it, and my DD2 has a name in the top 30.

I LOVE Orla Florence Rose :) But the other DDs only have one middle name so can't start with double middle names now!

Hmmm - may just keep with Orla and have Rose or Florence as a middle name and wait until she's born to decide :)

Not really common at all. On the other hand, it might be in a few years' time, and it sounds similar to a lot of names that are popular right now (Isla, Ella, Ayla, Lola). There's absolutely nothing wrong with "of the moment" names, but if you don't want one then perhaps Orla is not the best.

Rose is nice.

ineedbanoffee · 24/10/2016 07:55

Well, considering that Rose is 64th and a lot like Rosie which is higher, and a lot of other flower names like Lily/Violet/Daisy etc, which are also very popular, the exact same argument could be made about Rose having the potential to become 'of the moment', I think. Popularity doesn't really worry me - as I said, my other two DDs have top 30 names.

On reflection, I think we're sticking with Orla. But still not sure about Rose or Florence as a middle name ... thank you all :)

My first has one middle name and second two. I'm sure your other DC wouldn't mind if you said you couldn't decide or that they got to pick the 2nd middle name.
