Hi, I'm just wondering if people see Joss as a boys name or girls name? Also, do you see it as a name in its own right or only as a shortening for something else?

TIA

Girls. Name in its own right.
Very nice too Smile

I know a baby boy called Joss. Only time I've ever heard of it.

calilark · 18/10/2016 20:45

Its on our list of boys name. I love it!

BikeRunSki · 18/10/2016 20:45

I work with a Jos, short for Joshua.
Actor Joss Ackland is a Jocelyn (this is actually one of his middle names)

I'd think if it as mainly boys name, but then there is Joss Stone.

Eolian · 18/10/2016 20:46

Boy or girl. Short for Jocelyn. I like it.

Sleeperandthespindle · 18/10/2016 20:46

I really like it. Girl for me. Jocelyn.

Sleeperandthespindle · 18/10/2016 20:47

But nice for a boy too!

NapQueen · 18/10/2016 20:47

Joss - girl. Name in its own right imo.

Catcheronthesly · 18/10/2016 20:48

Yeah, I used to think it was a boys name, but now I feel it's a bit more feminine - I don't want to saddle my child with a name that makes everyone think they're a different gender (I know someone who has this & she hates the fact that everyone expects her to be male).

I do like it best as a standalone name though.

I know a toddler boy called Joss.

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 18/10/2016 20:49

Joss Stone is female

Catcheronthesly · 18/10/2016 20:50

Hmmm, seems quite mixed opinions. I prefer it for a girl but I think I'm really going to have to take some time to consider it now (& not sure DH will approve after I've shown him this thread!)

Joss is boys name to me.

Jos Buttler, england cricketer.

CurlsLDN · 18/10/2016 20:52

Joss stones full name is joscelyn.

And I know a man called Joss. I see it as a masculine name that also makes a great nickname for a girl, like Billy or Charlie

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/10/2016 20:53

Jos Buttler is Joseph

Catcheronthesly · 18/10/2016 20:53

I thought it could be short for Josephine for a girl? We wouldn't have used that though as we already have one in the family.

Not that keen on Jocelyn to be honest. We probably would go for Joss on its own if we do use it. Maybe for a middle name?

Boy.

starsinyourpies · 18/10/2016 21:00

I have known them male and female, both short for Jocelyn (male one very posh!)

CharminglyGawky · 18/10/2016 21:01

Boy, my immediate thought was Joss Whedon... But then we are a nerdy house here Grin

But I guess it could be for a girl as well, short for Jocelyn for example or just Joss as in Stone. Ont think it works as a nickname for Josephine anymore than it would for Joanna, the sounds are too different!

Tuiles · 18/10/2016 21:03

I think of it as a boys name, I knew a Jocelyn at uni.

But Joss Stone though. Hmm. It does have a slight female ring.

NattyTile · 18/10/2016 21:08

Joss in my head is a man'a name. And short for Joceylin or Josiah or Joshua.

I know it can be for women too, but I don't know any.

Stick.

Sorry.

littlejeopardy · 18/10/2016 21:18

I also think of Joss Whedon and would think it is a boys name.
