Toby, Robin or Saul?

Which do you prefer:
Toby
Robin
Saul

If you like Toby, would you just call him Toby or would he be Tobias on the birth certificate?

What nickname(s) could we use for Robin other than Rob (which I'm not a huge fan of)?

Would you assume Saul was Jewish?

DH really likes two of the three in the list but I'm leaning towards the other one!

FWIW, my favourite boy's name is Leo, but I can't use it sadly. I also like Maxim (Max for short) but it doesn't work with the surname.

Saul would set off my Jew-dar as o have never come across a Saul who was not Jewish.

user1471734618 · 16/09/2016 14:07

'set off your Jew-dar'?

how offensive is that ?
Jesus Christ.

OliviaStabler · 16/09/2016 14:07

Toby!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 16/09/2016 14:07

Robin, no question!!!

LuckySantangelo1 · 16/09/2016 14:09

Saul is a lovely name. Unusual too. Robin, as others have said, is a bit drippy. I am indifferent to Toby.

Bigbiscuits · 16/09/2016 14:12

Why offensive?

I am Jewish. And a name like Saul would set off my Jew-dar.

Plenty of minorities have dars to pick out the little signs that help you guess if others have the same background as them

Bigbiscuits · 16/09/2016 14:14

God forbid that people should use names as a clue to people's background!

AveEldon · 16/09/2016 14:14

Prefer Toby & Saul

user1471734618 · 16/09/2016 14:14

I suppose so yes

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/09/2016 14:15

Maybe Saul will be the new Reuben, embraced by the gentiles.

NameChange30 · 16/09/2016 14:16

Bigbiscuits

Ignore user, I don't think someone who compares one of my favourite names to a dog or a horse is the best judge of what's offensive or not Grin

DH and I are not Jewish, but it turns out I/we like quite a few Hebrew names.

I'm on the fence about Saul, I do like it but one of my favourite girl's names also sounds Jewish, so if we used both (if I ever have a girl, hope I do!) I think people might find it a bit strange.

I like Saul, its a bit different. I wonder what the meaning is?

SleepFreeZone · 16/09/2016 14:17

I have a Toby, Tobias on the birth cert to give him options.

Bigbiscuits · 16/09/2016 14:18

Maybe Saul will get used more widely. But I don't think it's the case yet.

To me Rueben, not only sets off of Jew-dar, but my Jew of Iraqi origin dar

Rueben and Ezra are names of old Jewish men who left Iraq in 50's dar.

user1471734618 · 16/09/2016 14:19

oh Namechange I am really sorry.
Actually the dog Toby that I knew was in Israel so he was a Jewish dog, incidentally....

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/09/2016 14:19

OP I think you're taking the dog and horse comments way too much to heart. These days pets are given 'human' names like Max and Poppy etc., it's hardly the most offensive thing to say a name reminds you of a dog/horse/cat/hamster. Rex is my favourite name, and that gets dog comments aplenty!

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/09/2016 14:20

Your dar is very well honed Bigbiscuits!Grin

Bigbiscuits · 16/09/2016 14:21

Namechange30,

I don't think people will find it strange. Just use the names you like. It's so hard to find names, that there is no need to impose another constraint on yourself.

But don't be surprised if people like me start asking you odd questions to fish for other Jew-dar clues!

Bigbiscuits · 16/09/2016 14:22

Mitzy, it's like being Professor Higgins!

AmeliaJack · 16/09/2016 14:23

I'm not sure about Saul, it's not an entirely positive Biblical name.

Toby. Meh (sorry)

Robin is lovely. And very cool. None of the Robins I have ever know were Rob.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/09/2016 14:24

I always felt sorry for New Testament Saul changing his name to boring old Paul.

Bigbiscuits · 16/09/2016 14:25

There is also Saul in Homeland as well as Better Call Saul.

So maybe it will start to be used more in the general box set watching community

user1471734618 · 16/09/2016 14:25

oh are Saul and Paul the same name?
Every day is a school day on Mumsnet!

Bigbiscuits · 16/09/2016 14:27

Yes, I believe Paul and Saul are the same

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/09/2016 14:28

But so different........
