Sister for Frida

DD1 is Frida (which we know is a bit of a marmite name, but we love it and it suits her very well).

DD2 due any day and we can't quite find something we like as much.

Current front-runners are:
Dorothy (Dora for short, probably)
Nell (just Nell, not short for anything)
We both like Aphra but think it sounds too much like Frida? Possibly as a middle name.
Ivy was near the top of the list but DP went right off it when he saw how popular it was getting.

I also like Edme - a family name and I haven't heard of any others, but think she will basically just get called Esme all the time.

Any thoughts on the above or other ideas. We quite like granny-ish names, as you might be able to tell...

Looooove Frida.

Also love Dora but do think that Dorothy as a full name is preferable.

Otherwise, I love Edith with Edie as a shortening. This was one I considered for DD (whose name is Ivy Grin)

Oh I really love Frida!! Of your list I really like Nell. Of the ideas above I love Greta, Maeve, Margot and Agnes (our dd is Margot and was almost Agnes/Nancy). I also love Agatha/Agathe.
But I think my favourite of them all to go with Frida is Mabel!

Ah I was going to suggest Ebba but see you don't want a Scandi theme. Are you Scandinavian? I love Nell, also love Nora! But that's already a no! Sorry not V helpful Grin

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/09/2016 08:05

Loving Ebba, never heard of that name before, it sounds lovely with Frida.

Popskipiekin · 01/09/2016 08:06

Nell is super - know a little girl called that, totally suits her, very sweet for baby and will grow with her into proper adult name. Perfect.
Think everyone else has offered up most "old English" names I could think of. I love Hazel, Violet, Nina, Sylvie/Sylvia.

TheBeanpole · 01/09/2016 09:17

We're not Scandinavian! So should probably limit the cultural appropriation- I just like the feel of the unfussy, non-flowery names.

I'm pleased people are also saying Nell is a proper grown-up name.

Sylvie I like too- along with Ebba, but possibly see a lifetime of saying 'No, not Emma, Ebba' ?

Agnetha?

SteviebunsBottrittrundle · 01/09/2016 09:34

I went to uni with an Ebba and I don't think it was particularly confusing. I could tell she wasn't saying Emma immediately, though I did have to ask her to repeat it as I hadn't heard of it before.

Loving this thread, most of the names are right up my street, I'll have to save this somehow....

If you think you might ever move country and live in another (non-English speaking) European country you might be interested to know to Frida and Ida would rhyme as Ida would be pronounced 'eee-dah' (like 'freee-dah' ). Just so you know.... Grin

In our family there's a Freda with sisters called Dorothy, Leonora and Irene.

IfNotNowThenWhenever · 01/09/2016 19:36

It's like a chorus line of 1940s actresses on this thread Grin
I like Iris and Nell but ONLY if Nell is actually Eleanor. Because I don't like nick names as proper names, but I know that's contentious..

MrsGsnow18 · 01/09/2016 19:40

Frida is a lovely name!
Of all the ones mentioned I like

chameleonspots · 02/09/2016 08:16

I love Nell too..but thinking of the playground it would end up Nelly and then there's the elephant song.
