I love the name Isabelle or Isabella but hate Izzie. That rules th put doesn't it? Coz she'd pick it as a teenager just to annoy me or her friends would use it. Do you think using Isabelle would slightly lessen the chances as one less syllable?! Am I clutching at straws?!

Most Isabels get known as Izzy, but you could insist on Bella instead.

You never know - I think if you stick with it they are likely to. I had an old school friend with a name like Christopher lots of variants but never went by anything other than Christopher! Good luck

I've met plenty of Isabellas (it's a super popular name around here) and not once have I heard it shortened to Izzy. Bella, yes, but not Izzy.

Although, these are preschoolers so less likely to use nicknames unless chosen by parents I guess.

Do you like Belle? If you don't then personally I'd rule out the name but if you don't mind it, then I'd call her Isabel and infrequently use the nn Belle so it would become the more used nn.

Personally I prefer Issy to Belle but I wouldn't not use a name because of either.

Both my sons have friends called Rebecca. Not Becky. I think if you use the full version, that's what other people use too. These girls are teenagers.

You must NEVER tell her you do not like Izzy.

She will change it to Izzy when she's a teenager especially if you push Bella/Belle.

Quite apart from that, most people shorten the name to Izzy anyway so she'll be called that by some people.
It's like calling someone Elizabeth and expecting her to never be called Liz.

I know quite a few older Isobels (ie 30s and upwards) in Scotland. None are ever Izzy. One is sometimes Bella. I think Izzy is quite a modern shortening? I'm sure you could avoid it if you consistently introduced her as Isobel (/Isabelle/ Isabella, although for no reason I can explain Isobel seems less likely to be shortened).

She would get called Izzy.

As a child I hated anyone shortening my name so it doesn't have to happen. A lot of parents don't like the NNs their children end up with, I think years ago this wasn't considered as thoroughly when naming children though.
Go with your gut. If it's really going to bug you that much then don't use it.
If on the other hand you love it and will just yourself always use full name and encourage others to do so then go for it!

I've got an Isabella and always call her Izzy or Iz I don't think calling her a variant will escape that particular shortening. She could also be a Bella or Ella though.

How about Annabelle nickname Annie?

The thing is that when they're a teenager you're lucky if their nickname is all you have to worry about!

How about Ishbel? It's the Scottish form of Isobel and I've never heard it shortened to izzy as there's no "s/z" sound

You could just try not to care. My parents (and thus my siblings) never called me by the very common and obvious shortening of my full name. My friends at school did, but that didn't really matter to my family. It's not like the two worlds intersect all that often really.

It's highly likely that at some point in her life people in her life will call her Izzy. If this idea causes you anguish you should pick another name. Because you cannot be one of those parents who tries to control their teenage child's name. They're just embarrassing!
