Is this a bit brave?

DS1 was born 3 days ago and we still need to agree a first name. Most of the names we like are quite traditional / conservative (James, Alexander, Benjamin, Adam, Thomas) and the middle name is definitely going to be Robert.

However, DH and I both randomly like the name Torben, which is of Danish origin - no family links, we just like it. We're worried that it's a bit unusual - will people know how to spell / pronounce it, does it sound a bit trendy, are we brave enough to go for something out of the ordinary...??

So, any thoughts on Torben? With Ben as the nickname? Thanks! Smile

I like it. But you can't have Torben Robert. Sorry.

winchesterfan · 30/07/2016 12:51

Wibblywobblyjellyhead They can name him what they damn well want!

Torben is a lovely name, and Robert goes well as a middle name, it doesn't matter that it's 'almost' an anagram, how often will he have to tell people his first and middle name!

PaperdollCartoon · 30/07/2016 12:55

Really like it. For me brings Scottish names like Torquil to mind (which I also really like) though not surprised if there's some Celtic/Scandinavian name crossovers.

It's different without seeming different. Use it!

Arborea · 30/07/2016 19:05

I love it too, and also toying with Erlend if DC2 is a boy. We have no Scandi connection either, just really like lots of the names!

Threefaries · 30/07/2016 20:37

Great name, you may regret not using it. It will most likely grow on those who are unsure anyway.

Grapefruit8 · 30/07/2016 21:13

Love it!

Shemozzle · 31/07/2016 00:01

I don't think it's out there at all, I've heard of lots of them recently on parenting forums but never in real life. I thought perhaps it was a Welsh name. I like it, I don't think you need to be brave to use it.

CodyKing · 31/07/2016 00:08

I like it - lots of similar names here - like Korben/Corben Torren very similar and not overly unusual - like a normal name without making a strange statement.

Thelastusername · 31/07/2016 00:09

Nice name, but sounds a bit too much like Corben for my liking.

CakeRattleandRoll · 31/07/2016 02:15

Great name. And I would consider it especially 'out there', just a refreshing change from all the 'popular' or 'traditional' names.

saffronwblue · 31/07/2016 02:19

I know a nice adult one with Danish heritage.

Veterinari · 31/07/2016 02:21

I know a Norwegian Torbjern (prn Torben ish) and no one thought it was unusual it has an issue with pronouncing his nane. Your spelling makes pronounciation easy - go for it

Owlytellsmesecrets · 31/07/2016 04:36

Oooohhhhhh I love Torben!!!

With last DC we had Corbin or Cleo. Our DD is called Cleo and we now have a rabbit called Corbin!

Arborea · 31/07/2016 09:02

I also like Soren too, which is another Scandi name that's easy to pronounce and spell.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 31/07/2016 11:14

Really, really like it. Go for it.

KERALA1 · 31/07/2016 19:08

I think it's great. Personally would go for Tor as shortening am so so bored of Ben - most families round here with boys have a Ben.

TwoLittleBlooms · 31/07/2016 19:19

I really like that name! Unusual but not out there.

Oh and congratulationsFlowers

Angiepoise · 01/08/2016 00:12

I think it's awful, sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 01/08/2016 00:14

I like it a lot, with Tor as a nickname.

Ham69 · 01/08/2016 04:55

Love it! Be brave. And Torben Peter is great.

Florrieboo · 01/08/2016 05:26

It is lovely, but, don't call him Ben, call him Torben. He can shorten it himself when he is older if he wants, or a nickname might evolve, but, don't call him Ben.

Pipilangstrumpf · 01/08/2016 07:35

Torben is great! Cool, classy and easy to spell and pronounce. Go for it!

But please don't shorten to Ben, there are so many Bens around already (and I find it a little dull).

MargotLovedTom · 01/08/2016 07:42

There's a Walking Dead charactercalled Tobin so I'd probably think I had slightly misheard and that was his name, as I'd never heard of Torben. I actually prefer Tobin, but Torben is okay.
