Any thoughts on Alexandra?

Got some great input on another thread and had a very short shortlist. Had a lovely girl this afternoon and DP through in this curveball.. I kind of like it.

I have an Alexandra. I love it obviously. She is always Alexandra - she is 10 and makes her feelings obvious if anyone tries to shorten it!

She has never been at school with another Alexandra which is nice.

I also have an Elizabeth, Victoria and Francesca if that helps.

SaltyMyDear · 26/07/2016 22:12

I love it.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 26/07/2016 22:12

I love it, wanted it for ds until he turned out to be a boy.

Lots of love shortenings - Alex, Lexi, Alexa, Ally. (I was planning Ally.)

FuzzyOwl · 26/07/2016 22:14

Lovely name.

SueTrinder · 26/07/2016 22:15

DD1 would have been Alexandra but DB got there first and his son is Alexander so we used it as a middle name instead (it's a family name). I love it, good choice by your DH.

GruffaloPants · 26/07/2016 22:19

Thanks everyone! Glad we haven't rushed into announcing a name. Discussions to be had tomorrow.. Will try it out on her tonight.

Beautiful name. Classic, international, versatile, elegant... what's not to love?

DramaAlpaca · 26/07/2016 23:32

Gorgeous name.

Classic, international, versatile, elegant... exactly this Smile

wobblywonderwoman · 26/07/2016 23:38

Congratulations !

Love it

Good idea to try it out

Floggingmolly · 26/07/2016 23:40

Beautiful.

NickiFury · 26/07/2016 23:40

It's my favourite girls name. Love it Smile

Sophronia · 27/07/2016 04:30

Congrats! I love Alexandra.

MrsCaecilius · 27/07/2016 09:35

Love it. Unfortunately my DP is Alex so I can't ever use it!

Rshard · 27/07/2016 09:37

Biased as I have one but I still love it 11 years on! We tend to use Alex, but she's going with Alexandra in secondary school for some reason!

Only1scoop · 27/07/2016 09:41

Beautiful

Strong and classic

akorda · 27/07/2016 16:00

Agree-it's lovely and very underused these days

MyBootsAreMuddy · 27/07/2016 16:08

I really like it. A friend has an Alexandra known as Xa or Xa-Xa which is pronounced like the beginning of Zara.

paddypants13 · 27/07/2016 16:15

It's a lovely name op. I had it on my list along with Alexander for a boy. Dh wasn't keen though. Angry

feralcat19 · 27/07/2016 16:27

Love it! Have used it as a middle name. Do you like Alex, Alix, Lexi though as it could well be shortened?

Raines100 · 27/07/2016 20:15

I'm a bit in love with this name and the shortening Alexa at the mo. Congratulations on your new arrival!

septembersunshine · 27/07/2016 20:27

My dh is Alexander (Alex) so we couldn't use it either. It's nice but I always think of it as quite masculine for a girls name (I think due to DH being an Alexander though, not because it is!).

It IS a great name though and good shortenings for a girl :) I would chose a soft middle name.

AChickenNamedDirk · 27/07/2016 20:32

I am one and hate it.

Unfortunately no good shortenings for me so was Alex. I hate having to clarify my gender all the time. Especially in male dominated work place.

Worse is when they call me Alexander without checking first.

Full name not used much.

I like it in principle but don't like being one.

I'd have chosen Alexa if I was choosing for myself. Hard to change it now.

WanderingNotLost · 28/07/2016 02:11

Love it. Got it earmarked for potential future DD.

WanderingNotLost · 28/07/2016 02:12

Also I'd shorten it to Allie, not Alex- for reasons posted above

Liz09 · 28/07/2016 06:46

I love it, but hate Alex. And it seems inevitable that it will get shortened to Alex (every Alexandra I know is Alex), kind of like Madeleine to Maddy. It unfortunately ruins what is otherwise a beautiful name.
