A two-part name question for you ladies....

Hello. Currently 21 weeks pregnant with DD2 and recently found out we are having another girl. DD1 is called Jessica Elizabeth.

Firstly, I wanted some suggestions for first names we might like if we like Jessica?

Secondly, I wanted to ask about middle names. 'Elizabeth' was picked for DD1 as every living memory of women in my mum's side of the family has had this in their name somewhere (it's mine and my Mum's middle name, my nan's first name, etc). The thing is each generation, by coincidence, only ever had one girl in it. So my question is would it be really weird to give DD2 the same middle name as DD1 so as not to break tradition, or is it weird for sisters to have the same middle name? I can't decide. Thoughts?

I don't think the same MN for sisters would be too weird, and really only the family will know/care anyway :)

I personally think it's weird for siblings to have the same MNs solely on account of the fact that people are free to use their MNS for everyday use. It's going to be a bit weird you end up with a Lizzie and Beth 20 years down the line. But each to their own.

I really can't decide if it would be weird or pretty cool for sisters to have a middle name in common.

I have two friends who's DD's share middle names, not weird at all when there is a family reason such as yours.

Oh I like Chloe too.

Middle names aren't chosen to be used, as such. I think they are nice when they are honouring someone or following a tradition.

So I think it's fine to use it again. It will be a talking point

I think it's fine - I knew a family of five sisters who all had the middle Anne, just because their mum liked it.

Could you perhaps consider Isabel, being a variant of Elizabeth? Or one of the derivative names like Lily or Lisa?

Myself, mum, aunt and 2 of her 3 daughters all have the same mn (it's a bit odd that my aunts middle dd has a random mn). Me and my dsis have different mn.
I don't think it's odd.

I know a Jessica with a DSis called Lydia, pretty, uncommon. What's not to love? You're welcome.

I'm really liking some of these name suggestions thank you. And it's interesting that most of you don't feel it would be weird to give both DD's the same middle name. It would be quite nice to have some connection that links them as sisters I guess, as well as which links them to my side of the family.

It is a very old Scots form of the Hebrew Elisheba and hasn't been used since about 1790!

How about Eliza for the middle name?

Oh I have just looked it up and got it a bit wrong - Alyssa Milano called her daughter Elizabella. I prefer Elisabelle!

My friend has a Jessica Elizabeth and her sister's called Eleanor Anne.

I'd give your second DD three names with Elizabeth being the third one, so something like Olivia Louise Elizabeth, Eleanor Beatrice Elizabeth or Chloe-Anne Elizabeth, where you hyphenate the first name or Rose-Anne Elizabeth.

Elisabella was also very popular, mostly in 17th and 18th centuries but still in use in the early 19th century.

About time both names were in use again, I think.

Did either you, your mum, your grandmother or great grandmother have a sister? If so, what was their middle name?

Personally, I wouldn't give both DCs the same middle name. Not because it's wrong - just because I'd keep it as a first born DD tradition instead (if that's what it is).

Totally ok to give both DDs the same mn. I'm part of a line of variants of the same name and I really like it. It would be even nicer if my DSis shared it too. However if you're not sure, are there any other females you might like to honour, from either side or friends?

Perhaps you could give dd2 two middle names? Elizabeth and something else...

An old friend of mine & her siblings all have the same unisex middle name. It sounds a bit strange, but it works.

Another friend has two daughters who each have two middle names but one of their middle names is the same IYSWIM.

Or you could pick a middle name that is a version of Elizabeth, maybe?

I know a family where every single child (all boys) have the same middle name (their father's name).

I think it says a bit about their father's psychology but other than that it hasn't bothered any of them a bit.

If I were you OP, I"d look for a middle name from your husband's family.

My dd1 has my mother's name as a middle name

My dd2 has my mother in law's name as a middle name

They both love the connection. They never use the actual names.
