Ariana (Aria). Does it instantly make you think of GoT?

I love Ariana, but would plan on calling dd Aria for short.
DH watches Game of Thrones and i've never seen it, however apparently Aria is a character in GoT and he doesn't want everyone to think we've named our child after a character from a popular tv show.

Opinions please? I love the name.

It's Arya (pronounced Ar-yah not Ar-ee-ah) on GoT so I think it's fine: beautiful name choice OP.

The TV character is Arya pronounced Arr-ya, though.
There is also a character in the books called Arianne so I suspect either way people who know GoT will think you're a fan!

But, I wouldn't think it was strange, or that someone had named their child after the character, if they used the name Aria.

However, to me, the Aria in Ariana and Aria as a standalone name are pronounced differently, so I'm not sure people will naturally be inclined to shorten it to Aria.

My best friend's DD is Aria and I think it's beautiful. It doesn't need to be short for Ariana, in fact I think that they are both lovely names in thier own right.

She would never be called Ariana, we just prefer longer names on birth certificates. My DS has a fairly long first name but has always been referred to, and introduced as, his nickname (think Alexander - Alex). Probably a bit odd but it's a family thing.

Nope. Aria has been a name I liked and knew before GoT. Plus it's spelled differently, as some already mentioned. I also like Ariana :) although this does make me think Dumbledore's little sister for some reason...

I watch GoT and it doesn't make me think of that at all. It does however make me think of the teeny tiny, remarkably ditzy but sweet Ariana Grande. Is that better?

Why do people name their child just to shorten it? Why not name them the shortened version in the first place? Genuinely curious.

Aria doesn't make me think of got as I read it ah-ree-ah and for some reason on got its gradually changed to aah-yah. It does however make me think of a little boy in my sons class at school lol

What about Ariane if the singer association bothers you? Or just Aria?
But Ariana Grande... I think she'll probably be forgotten in a few years?

I like Ariadne and Adienna (wandering off the aria path) but could you call her anything at all on the birth certificate if you're not going to use the name? I know loads of People who go by their middle name or surname!

The TV show will be finished within the next two years, so I don't think that long-term there will be any association to be honest.

However, do bear in mind that as a result of the show, the name is super popular at the moment, if that's something you care about.

Aria And Arianna (Ariana) aren't two versions of the same name and they have two different meanings. Aria means Air and Arianna/ Ariana means chaste.

My little girl is Aria, and people do ask if it's from GoT a lot. Or if not that, then pretty little liars.
We got it from a game. It sounded pretty, we looked up the meaning, and the fact it was the main tune in an opera and had roots meaning air and chosen it. GoT and PLL didn't factor into the equation - didn't even realise about PLL until I started watching it on maternity leave!

There's a similar sounding name Rhian, it's Welsh and it means Maiden.

Next season of GOT is the last apparently so won't be an issue. I think it's a lovely name.
