So i have just been reading the news and i saw the name Esteysi... apparently it is pronounced Stacy, but this had to be described in the news story becuase it was shown as Esteysi 'Stacy' Surname.

I was just wondering who would give their child a nice, normal name but lumber them with a spelling that will have to be explained for the rest of their life.

And what are the worst most unusual spellings of normal names you have come accross?

Anthony Martial is a Man Utd player.

GiveUsACwtch · 03/07/2016 15:44

Why if the boy was wearing a Manchester United shirt, then it is a players surname... Antony Martial.

I've seen Jessykah recently.

I don't normally comment on name threads as I find they generally descend into sneering and nastiness. But bloody hell, I hated that name.

plimsolls · 03/07/2016 15:49

i quite like it (on threads and in face to face situations) when people get a bit sniffy about a "yoonique" name only to find they are completely mistaken and the child has a completely traditional name from their own culture, or it's a nickname, and so on. Why do I like it? Probably because I am a cow. But there we are.

Agree Martial is probably relating to the actual footballer's surname. Also, I would guess that "Stacey" is just that women's nickname. For example, my friend Olashoula goes by the name "Shola" as far as I'm aware her parents named her Olashoula as its a traditional name in their home country, and Shola is just the diminutive form she uses.

plimsolls · 03/07/2016 15:50

*woman's nickname.

bittapitta · 03/07/2016 15:56

Esteysi looks like a Spanish/Hispanic name to me. "Stacey" must have been the nickname OP. Way to go making snobby assumptions though. Hmm

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/07/2016 17:53

Martial is extremely odd. I get that it's the footballers surname but to name your child it?

neonrainbow · 03/07/2016 17:58

Oh good we're doing this again. What are your kids names op?

plimsolls · 03/07/2016 18:05

alis just in case you are not joking.... The boy was wearing a football shirt. It is likely he is a fan of Martial and is wearing a replica shirt.

If you were joking- sorry!

plimsolls · 03/07/2016 18:20

I can sympathise with the confusion though as I once thought I saw John Terry outside a football stadium Blush

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2016 18:22

Liya, pronounced Leah. Got told off for saying it as liar!

originalmavis · 03/07/2016 18:26

I know a Martial who is french - not from a whacky or artsy family. I don't think it's a 'waay out' name there.

florascotianew · 03/07/2016 18:37

Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis) was a famous ancient Roman poet. Born in Spain, he lived in Rome and wrote in Latin.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/07/2016 18:41

I know one of those Toddler! Think the one I know has a h on the end though.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/07/2016 18:42

No plims I wasn't joking...I was just being really thick in that moment! BlushGrin

plimsolls · 03/07/2016 18:55

Grin alis At least you didn't shout "oh my god, John Terry?!" in front of a crowd of football fans (many of whom I then belatedly realised also had Terry on their replica shirts!)

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 03/07/2016 20:16

Ah okay. It's after a footballer.
Makes sense.
Not a footie fan.
Glad it wasn't his name

originalmavis · 03/07/2016 20:30

But it could've been. It's the first name if the one I know.

sykadelic · 04/07/2016 04:57

abcde is the weirdest I've heard of (ab-see-dee) but I'm friends with someone who has named all her kids names like "Winter, Summer, Rainbow" etc

icklekid · 04/07/2016 05:26

I taught I Sian (which I think is a lovely name) whose parents pronounces it Cyan (si-an).

originalmavis · 04/07/2016 07:33

Maybe they were printers...
