Can I shorten this name to Kit?

DS3 is called Cornelius. It suits him, though was bottom of our list until he popped out and just looked like a Cornelius. Plus my Grandma is Irish so she is delighted.

Shortening it is tricky though. Obviously not Corny! Don't like Neil/Neal. Kit has nothing to do with anything, I know, but is a lovely shortening. At the moment we call him Cornelius or baby or whatever but I imagine at school something shorter will emerge.

Is Kit a bit daft or reasonable given the alternatives?

Thanks all

Sorry but no. When you picked cornelius you were making a statement and now you have to stick by it. It doesn't really shorten to anything.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/06/2016 19:05

I don't see why not. Lots of nns are nothing to do with the given name. Otherwise I can only think of Lee! Love Kit though so id go for it :) congrats!

Eli?

Gracey79 · 26/06/2016 19:07

Cole?

HarlettOScara · 26/06/2016 19:09

Whoops, posted too soon.

I don't think Kit works as a nickname for Cornelius as its a well known diminutive of Christopher. It's a bit like calling a girl Elizabeth then shortening it to Kate.

Eli jumps out at me as a nn when I see Cornelius written down.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/06/2016 19:09

Ooh Cole is a good one!

Hamsolo · 26/06/2016 19:11

Cor, or Cory?

sonlypuppyfat · 26/06/2016 19:11

A bit like having a Jonathan and calling him Tim

LaceyLee · 26/06/2016 19:14

I've heard Con as a nn for Cornelius. You could call your kid kit if you so wish but it's not short for Cornelius.

FlopIsMyHero · 26/06/2016 19:15

I know an (Irish) Cornelius - he is known as Con! Lovely name, congratulations on your new baby.Flowers

ChessieFL · 26/06/2016 19:15

I know someone called Cornelius who uses Con as a nn.

ChessieFL · 26/06/2016 19:15

X posts!

HedgeSchool · 26/06/2016 19:32

Irish Corneliuses are generally called Con.

notagiraffe · 26/06/2016 19:34

Cory is good. So's Eli. If you want something more conventional - Leo?

1horatio · 26/06/2016 19:34

I like Cole.. And Lius.
Anyhow, of course you can call your DS Kit. :) It's cute and many nns don't have a clear (or any...) connection to a person's given name.

MacaroonMama · 26/06/2016 19:35

Thanks for responses. I had never thought of Eli, I like that but it has a different feel to it. Cory is nice too. I like Con as a grown-up shortening but think maybe as a little one, we'll just have to call him the whole name! Yes I know what you mean about Elizabeth being shortened to Kate. I was thinking about Peggy from Margaret etc but I guess that is established at least... I will see what DH thinks about Corey/Cory. His face would fit that Wink

Though I suppose Corey is a name in itself whereas Kit is a clear nickname... Hmmm...

All Irish Cornelius are shortened to Con. It's a fine name for a little boy!

landofmilkandhoney · 26/06/2016 20:43

Cornelius-what a fab name! Love Cory as a shortening. Still have a soft spot for the young Corey Haim-sadly no longer with us I think.

Penfold007 · 26/06/2016 20:47

Your child so you can do what you want but Kit isn't a diminutive of Cornelius. What about Cees, Kees, Con or Nils?

1horatio · 26/06/2016 21:17

I personally think a name like popcorn, cob, corn or maize would be cute. CORNelius... But I'm tired and hormonal. And now also hungry (I'll have to make me a snack). So maybe not the best idea...

Babymouse · 26/06/2016 21:20

Since when does a nickname have to relate to someone's first name? Op use what you like, you can be sure his friends will probably come up with something different in the future. ;)

SanityClause · 26/06/2016 21:22

I knew someone called Cornelius who was always known as Kenny. I don't really like it, but you might?

HedgeSchool · 28/06/2016 10:08

Another frequent Irish shortening of Cornelius in my neck of the woods is 'Nailus'. Which I doubt you'll go for. Grin

BigGreenOlives · 28/06/2016 10:12

Neil - well known but not everywhere
