I have a Raphael who loves his name. We call him Rafi/Rafa/Rastus.

Rastus/Rastas is an extremely racist term. I'd feel very uncomfortable hearing someone call anyone that. I'd have a google of what it means if you haven't already.

Okay. I apologise to my auto correct. Apparently Rastus IS a known baby name. And also a perjorative term in America.

I like Raphael for a boy, but think it would be unkind to lumber a girl with what is essentially a boy's name. I have lived with a difficult name and she won't thank you for it.

FWIW, Raffaella is a proper Italian name - the other spellings aren't. They may well be names in Spanish or Portuguese of course.

Showofhands phew! Glad it was just an autocorrect problem. I was worried that you didn't know what it meant, end up calling him it in public somewhere and facing some angry people. Autocorrect hates us sometimes!

I love Raphael and Raffaella. They're lovely names. Much better than Alabama imo OP.

Our 15 yr old dd is Raphaela and yes it is the correct spelling in Germany and English speaking nations.

She is known as Raffa for a nn (given by friends not us )

Rastus is also a short version of the old English name Erastus.

DD (15 months) is Raphaella. Although more often referred to as Rafi, Riff-Raff and Rifter (last two by her older siblings!)
