So I'm now 37 weeks and DP has been floating Thelma about since 23weeks, it was his Grandmas name and it's the only girls name he likes! I personally think it's an old lady name, I'm all for old names coming back but this one I just can't bring myself to use!! Am I being unreasonable? Everyone I mention it to makes a funny face and sort of tilts their head at me as if to say really?? Opinions please X

Actually - it's charming.

Soft but not wet.

I know a 3 year old Alma and when I first heard it I thought old lady, but actually is lovely and suits her.

BeckyWithTheMediocreHair · 17/05/2016 18:58

Thelma Jean is AWESOME.

DoItTooJulia · 17/05/2016 19:00

I like it Smile

GoldPlatedBacon · 17/05/2016 19:07

What about Elma Jean?

HopeClearwater · 17/05/2016 19:40

Watch any episode of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? and you won't name any new baby Thelma!

CremeEggThief · 17/05/2016 19:45

Freya Jean is wonderful.

CleverPlansAndSecretTricks · 17/05/2016 19:59

I love Thelma Jean! If you're not so keen could always have them both as middle names.

Daphne Thelma Jean
Audrey Thelma Jean
Marilyn Thelma Jean
Margaret Thelma Jean

I think Thelma Jean is a beautiful name. Very unusual but lovely. She will not have to worry about all the Thelmas in her class. Know two Thelmas. One is in her 60s one in her 40s.

Cosycottage4 · 17/05/2016 21:20

I do think Thelma is a bit of a granny name, but thea is sweet Smile

1horatio · 18/05/2016 10:12

I like it! :)

1horatio · 18/05/2016 10:13

Seriously, Thelma is simply lovely!

squoosh · 18/05/2016 10:39

There are some old lady names that should be left to the mists of time. Thelma is one of those. Along with Enid and Beryl.

What about Thora, Thora Hird associations aside I think it's quite cool.

cecilelliott · 18/05/2016 10:41

Don't really like the sound of Thelma, but, going down the Scooby Doo path, what about Daphne?

I think this is a gorgeous sounding name and is also a lovely-smelling flowering shrub!

CauliflowerBalti · 18/05/2016 10:46

I really like Thelma. It's a very cool name.

Strong and capable, but the 'th' sound is soft, as is ending in an 'a'. Which is all utter bollocks really but that's how it plays out in my head.

This isn't to say you should feel pressured into calling your daughter Thelma if you don't like it. But not everyone will do the tilty head 'really?' at you, if you do go ahead.

CauliflowerBalti · 18/05/2016 10:49

I hadn't realised Jean will be the actual middle name.

Thelma Jean rocks. In a Billie Jean way.

I disagree with your view that you need a not old-ladyish name to offset Jean. That would make the Jean stand out.

Elizabeth Jean. Charlotte Jean. Isobel Jean. They just don't work, tonally.

Thelma Jean. Thea Jean. Audrey Jean. COOL AS.

NapQueen · 18/05/2016 10:54

My Gran is Thelma. It's very old lady to me (and I love the name Olive!).

What's your favourite name OP?

JakeyB · 18/05/2016 16:23

I wasn't keen on Thelma till you said the middle name was Jean. Thelma Jean would be seriously cool.
