Hi, I've posted a few times here regarding middle names over the last couple of weeks.

Ds2 has to be registered by today! Our appointment is at 4.

His first name is Ewan.

Ds1s middle names are both dp and my fathers first names.

Our current ideas are

Ewan Neil - he was born in out house with dp delivering his as he was early. Our house name is Ardneil Cottage.
I like it but would quite like a family connection also.

Family names we've got are from my side, Edward and Richard.

Dps side, Alan and David

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Would you consider two middle names?

Ewan Edward Neil sounds nice.

Ewan Alan doesn't flow well IMO.

It had a lovely flow to it.

My boys both have 2 middle names. They love having an "extra" name.

I like Ewan Edward Neil but as ds1 has a family name from either side ds2 will only have one from my side.

Will have to see what dp thinks. He likes the idea of Neil but just on its own so we don't have to pick a name from either side.

I'd pick a name from each side, so...

Ewan Edward David
Ewan Richard Alan

Or another combination of those names

I'd call him Ewan Ardneil, which both sounds rather splendid, has a good story attached and doesn't mean anything silly (I mean, it's not as though your house is called Laburnum Bower or Dunroamin' ).

I agree with your DH on the politics of choosing names from various sides of the family.

I much prefer Ardneil to Neil too.

Of the 4 remaining family names, are any of them more significant emotionally to you than others?

I'm really apprehensive of using Ardneil, even though so many people have said to use it!
I think perhaps because it's just a house we rent on the land of a farm with the same name. If we owned it it may be different.
However, both my children and my cat were all born here (both babies came early and quickly!) so I do think it's quite suitable!

I'm really struggling to make up my mind about what I'd like to use!

He agrees that our family names don't really work. He doesn't like the idea of having 2 E's as initials.

He likes Neil as there is a meaning. He isn't keen on Ardneil.

Ds1 originally had dps fathers/grandfathers name as its tradition. We added my fathers name as he died 2 months after ds was born.

What puts me off Neil a bit is that that it's one of my best friends fathers names!

But Ardneil will always be the place where your son was born, regardless of whether you own it, or go on living there...

Neil is fine, but a bit nothing-y, and I'd be with you on finding it odd to be using a name I associate primarily with a friend's dad.

Cab they not have the same middle names. Me and 2 of my cousins have the same middle name. This gas been passed onto their daughters too.

What did you go with?

Ardneil gets my vote. Sounds much more distinguished than plain Neil.
