Middle name for Mabel

Expecting baby number 3, don't know if it's a boy or girl. I thought we had settled on a girls name when DH says he still loves our original choice that we picked. I had been 'put off' the name due to family's reaction as they had bad associations with the name because of a family member - who I never met! But after discussing with DH I still really love the name and we decided that family members will come around - we are not going to tell them until she is here (if it's a girl).
We have chosen the name Mabel. I know lots of people on mumsnet dislike this name and think its an old lady name but that doesn't bother me.

I just want some opinions on a middle name for Mabel. As It's an old lady name I would like something feminine. Here are some ideas I have, some are family names.

Mabel Rose
Mabel Alice
Mabel Eloise
Mabel Aurora / Aurelia
Mabel Jane
Mabel Hope

Please choose the one you like the best or suggest new ideas, thank you :)

I like Mabel. It is my gran's name, but that makes me like it more. Her middle name is Alma. Mabel Alma.

WavingFlag · 05/04/2016 08:06

I love mabel and think mabel violet is lovely.
Out of interest nosey what it your boys name choice?

blueandgreendots · 05/04/2016 08:24

My grandma's name was Jessie and I'm considering calling baby due this month Mabel Jessie if it's a girl. I also like Christabel nn Belle

Baz13 · 05/04/2016 09:13

Wavingtheflag- boys names are a bit harder...I have no idea really. We are considering Kit as a first name, but I am very unsure (only as it's a diminutive of DH's name Christopher).
We had considered Freddie, Bertie and Albie.
But I need ideas for boys names as DH vetoes EVERYTHING!!!
Any suggestions welcome ;)

Charlie, Tilly and Josh(ua)
Charlie, Tilly and Harvey
Charlie, Tilly and Freddie (Frederick/Alfred)

I was going to suggest Mabel Bryony but I see someone put forward Mabel Violet which is a great combination.

Ideally we'd all choose what we want for our DCs and everyone else could lump it. If the extended family is likely to react poorly initially to Mabel then the middle name of a popular member eg in your case Violet might help them get over that. Surely it takes a very damaged or stubborn individual to look at an innocent newborn called X and think, No I can't help it I'm forever going to associate this child with a bad apple.

Elise16 · 05/04/2016 12:19

Mabel Alice or Mabel Mary both sound lovely

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 05/04/2016 13:29

I think Charlie, Tilly & Albie runs the risk of sounding a bit "cutesy".

Freddie would be much nicer (in my humble opinion) and Bertie is just daft. With most names, I would agree that once you know someone of that name you just associate it with them & then either like or dislike it according to that person. But not Bertie. I know a lovely, friendly, beautiful 9 year old boy called Bertie. He's fabulous - but his name is still awful.

Baz13 · 05/04/2016 17:10

Thank you for the opinions - we did think Albert on BC then use Albie / Bertie as an everyday name but think I agree about the names sounding too cutesy as they all end in the 'ee' sound. Think that's why we like Kit as it's ending is different.

I think my family would get over their bad association :)

Hello OP

What about Mabel Furball Grin.

Actually in RL my middle name is Ann how about Mabel Ann?

(my first name isn't Mabel tho...)

septembersunshine · 09/04/2016 09:57

I know a six year old Mabel! She's so sweet and a good friend to my little girl. What about Mabel Rosa? I like the name. She can always be called May (or at a stretch Belle) if she takes a sever dislike to it in later years. May is the better nickname if you ever do use one though...

My vote goes to Mabel Rose :)

crapfatbanana · 09/04/2016 10:23

At the risk of sounding like a hippy, my first thought was Mabel Moon.

What abou Amabel Claire. Oops, that was autocorrect, it should have said Mabel, although I like Amabel too.

Mabel Alicia
Mabel Zita
Mabel Ruby
Mabel Hepzibah
Mabel Kerenza
Mabel Olwen
Mabel Emmeline
Mabel Daisy
Mabel Elisabeth
Mabel Celeste
Mabel Viola
Mabel Fleur
Mabel Bryher
Mabel Katie
Mabel Eleanor
Mabel Evie
Mabel Rosa
Mabel Lauren
Mabel Lucy
Mabel Mary

My dd2 is Mabel Elizabeth and I love her name.. It really suits her!

My choices had I had a boy would have been Freddie, Stanley or Arthur all of which works with your other two in my opinion! 😄

fruitscone · 11/04/2016 11:06

I love the name Mabel - it is my DD's name!

It caused some raised eyebrows when we announced it post birth but I really didn't give a shit and everyone came around fast. She totally suits it (she is not cutesy and old wifie-ish; she is a cool sense of style, has a kick-ass hairstyle and is quite quietly, confidently individual and a very loyal person). More importantly, she LOVES her name.

Pre-DD i read the meaning of the name as being: 'a loving companion' and that alone almost had me decided!

For middle names, I think Mabel Alice is lovely. We chose a foreign middle name as DH is not a Brit.

Baz13 · 11/04/2016 17:57

chookford - I love Arthur and stupidly told a my best friend's sister who was already pregnant that we would call a boy Arthur, and she announced after her 20 week scan that she was having a boy and going to call him Arthur. Gutted as I cannot use the name now (even though I don't see her that much). Freddie is a name on our boy list (but i'm not 100%).

Fruitscone- Your Mabel sounds brilliant - I also love the meaning of Mabel :)

It's good to hear from mums who have DD called Mabel. We are torn between Mabel Rose and Mabel Alice.

baz if you love the name Arthur I would be inclined to still use it if you cannot find another name that you really want to use! But I do understand the not wanting to now as someone else has nicked it! I love that both my girls have names that aren't common (my oldest is Nellie) and there are no other nellies or Mabel's around here that we know of!

I personally prefer Mabel Rose but that's just my prefernce! You will have to let us know what you finally decide on! Wink

Biscuitsneeded · 11/04/2016 19:40

I know a sibling pair called Mabel and Arthur. They have also got a sister called Daphne (am outing my location completely!).

How about Mabel Anne or Mabel Annie?

Belvedere · 11/04/2016 19:46

I have a Bertie (full name Albert) I don't think it's that cutsie at all and I hate cutsie names.
I'm now having a girl and Mabel Alice is on the shortlist so it sounds like we have similar tastes!
What other girl names do you like?

eatmytoes888 · 13/04/2016 13:01

Mabel Frances

Mabel Georgina

Mabel Delphine

Love Arthur!

lurkymclurkerson · 13/04/2016 20:05

I like the suggestion of Mabel Amelia up thread. Mabel Alice also sounds very pretty (bit biased, I'm an Alice)

hels71 · 13/04/2016 21:45

I like Mabel Alice too

fruitscone · 14/04/2016 07:21
