A guy at work has asked me to put this question to the good people of MN. He and his wife disagree apparently!

Sophia

Sophia. Sofia looks too much like sofa.

EssentialHummus · 01/04/2016 13:19

We will probably go with Sofia - it's DP's name of choice and that's the Russian spelling - but I'd personally prefer Sophia. Sofia is a city in Bulgaria, and I can't shake that.

AuntieStella · 01/04/2016 13:25

I prefer Sophia, because I read Sofia as the Bulgarian capital. But if your colleague has an a Eastern European surname, then the 'f' spelling may well sit better.

Sofia. Sophia too much like Sophie

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 01/04/2016 13:34

To me, Sophia is a girl's name and Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria.

So Sophia.

Sophia, danger is that a Sophia will be called Sophie and a Sofia will not but Sofia looks odd in English, like Sofa. I have friends here in Brazil that have a little Sophia. They used the ph even though the correct way would be with an F because they think it looks a lot nicer. I agree.

I have an almost 11 year old with the f spelling. We chose it mainly because although I love her name, I dislike the name Sophie and the ph seemed too close to it. She occasionally gets Fia which is nice as well.

Thanks. Have passed this on!

Sofia, Bulgaria. Been there, so it's the first thing I think of. Had a great time, though.

daisydalrymple · 01/04/2016 15:11

Sofia is dd's Middle name. We chose the f as we're Welsh and she has a Welsh first name so they looked better together. (Even though in the Welsh alphabet the f is actually a v sound and the ff is a f sound!)

I would say it depends on any other name / surname etc.
