Opinion on Caera?

I really like Chiara, have loved it for years- but my DH has too many Irish relatives called Chiara or Keira so has said no.
His work colleague had her baby three months ago and called her Cara, so that's now out too. My friend has a baby called Clara.

Wondered if could tempt DH with another similar name i came across, Caera- which some [dodgy] websites claim is Irish and pronounced "Care-ah" - i have never heard it before and am not Irish myself so don't know if it has any negative connotations (or was just made up).

Thoughts and help with pronunciation much appreciated!

I like Chiara, Keira, Cara and Clara and it sounds like the best are taken already. Caera I'm not so sure, it sounds a bit like a name for a soap and also like "carer".

I wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce it and when I saw it as your thread title I assumed it was a contraceptive - sorry!

Sounds made up and looks made up. A lot names described as Irish on those baby name websites are nothing of the sort.

If Ciara and Cara are out what about what about Clodagh or Caoilinn/Keelan?

I'd pronounce this as Kyra if I saw it.

It looks pretty but you're going to have pronunciation issues and I haven't come across it as an Irish name before.

What about caoihme (keeva)?

It's a made-up name, not an Irish name.

A friend has a Cadhla. What about that?

Actually Caer (Caer Ibormeith in full) was the name of one of the Goddesses of the Tuatha de Danann. The Goddess of dreams and prophecy and associated with swan mythology (along with the Children of Lir). So it is a derivative of an actual name.

I know this via a Wikipedia-hopping session.

I wouldn't rule out a name because one of DH's colleagues just had a baby with the same name btw. The babies will presumably not be going to the same nurseries/ school? Your DH/ colleague may well change jobs... etc.

All your DH needs to say when he tells his colleague is 'Our baby's name is Cara! It's been a favourite for ages and great minds think alike...' kind of thing?

Alternatively - if you like Cara how about Tara? (or Carys? - I know it sounds different but to me it has a similar sort of vibe...)

Agree with pp that Caera just looks a tiny bit 'odd' and made-up.

These others look really lovely but no clue how most are pronounced which makes me feel a bit of a phony. We did want to recognise heritages (irish for DH and scottish for me) but i'm reminded of that scene in Catastrophe where they call the baby Muirinn (sp?) as the mum is Irish and the dad of the baby cant even say it... Very funny, not massively wanting to replicate the shamebaggery of not being able to prpnounce own child's name though. Back to drawing board for me!

I really like Caer but it reminds me of Caer Paravel in the Narnia books...
I agree about the colleague's baby but DH is adamant it would look creepy as he admitted we didnt have a name yet and asked her for her list of names (!!!!) and she didnt give it to him...

Diggum The Children of Lir is hazy to me. All I remember is an evil stepmother turning them into swans and then something about nettles!

I was reading it as Seera, as in Caesar...

Some similar(-ish) Scottish names if you want to reflect you heritage: Canna, Carna (island names, occasionally used for girls)
Corra (a prophecy Goddess from the Gaelic for heron)
Coira (from the Gaelic for whirlpool)
Coila (the name of Robert Burns's Muse).

What about Kiara?

Caera looks like a medical name, like a haematoma.
