What comes to mind when you hear the name Theodore?? (Theo)

Theodore (Theo) is currently top of our list for baby boy due in March but I'm not 100% about it. Something very specific comes to mind when I hear this name (don't want to say as don't want to influence any answers!) that currently has quite negative connotations/links.

So what comes to mind when you hear the name Theodore? What images/people spring to mind?

Thank you!!

Niche reference for sure, at least for UK. I am willing to bet most UK populace never even heard of The Cosby show.

5madthings · 03/01/2016 16:04

I used to watch the Cosby show but hadn't put the two together.

Funnily enough when we announced ds1's name my.Mil didn't like it as she thought it was posh, but it's grown on her.

There are lots of nickname possibilities, for a while out theo was called ' the O man'. He has two middle names and a double barrelled surname so I guess altogether it looks a bit posh written down but we are just average. I just asked my theo what he thought of his name, if he liked it etc. He looked at me like I was mad in the way tgat teens do and said he doesn't think about it, it just is his name.

Haha, thanks 5madthings teenagers are so funny. Yes I do like that there are a lot of nickname possibilities.

Good news that no one else has thought of The Cosby Show yet!

It's a lovely name. I know several boys and men with this name. It's great

doitanyways · 03/01/2016 16:38

It's lovely. Very middle class but that's not a bad thing! Smile

MoreGilmoreGirls · 03/01/2016 16:41

T bag from prison break I'm afraid.

thegiddylimit · 03/01/2016 16:51

Top Google link is Theodore Roosevelt so I think you're safe, it's certainly the first thing I'd think of. I watched the Cosby Show when younger but would never have made the link.

Sprink · 03/01/2016 16:53

Theo is a great name. Might be popular on MN but hardly in top 10 territory.

In fact it was my first choice but my husband put the kibosh on that idea. Our surname is Door. (No, I hadn't made the connection.)

Newmummy15 · 03/01/2016 17:09

Another one here for Alvin, Simon... Theodore! I do think it's cute tho

Issie339 · 03/01/2016 17:19

Thanks everyone for the responses, pretty much all positive- we don't really mind about it being a bit posh/middle class or popular and I think I can live with The Chipmunks/President/Footballer links!! Haha.

Boys names are so difficult, I don't remember being so hung up on negative links etc when we were naming DD!

He's a tug boat and a friendly tug boat too
Oh Theodore

I love it
And that was ds favourite programme

MyCatIsBayleigh · 03/01/2016 17:27

I think of the bloke in Prison Break... Do like it tho :)

5madthings · 03/01/2016 17:30

We found boys names much easier than girls names, good job as we have four boys and one girl. Dc6 due at easter and we don't know if it's a boy or a girl.

I just remembered we used to sing theo... Theeeoooo in the same tune as the trio advert?

I quite like thalia and Thea as girls names but wouldn't use them as we have a theo iyswim. I guess the only thing was when ds1 was little lots of his friend called him Feeo as they couldn't pronounce the th sound but I am.talking about when they were two/three, it was s short lived thing and he himself could say his name fine from when he learnt to talk (early talker).

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy op, hope all goes smoothly.

Flumplet · 03/01/2016 17:31

We have a 4yo Theodore and we're definitely not posh. He goes by Theodore at school (policy that they have to learn to recognise and write their full name), most people call him Theo at home, but to me he is Teddy James. I love the name.

timelytess · 03/01/2016 17:32

Nice teddy bear. Its a perfect name.

Issie339 · 03/01/2016 17:37

Thanks everyone, sounds like there are lots of gorgeous little (and not so little!) Theos out there Smile

A chipmunk!

Ditsy4 · 03/01/2016 18:02

I teach one Theo and love the name...and the child.

Issie339 · 03/01/2016 18:17

Thanks! Theodore/Theo has got a much better reaction on here than our previous favourite which was Dexter.

dotdotdotmustdash · 03/01/2016 18:20

Theo over Dexter every time!

Theo is classy, kind and gentle
Dexter is harsh, uncompromising, and more recently a Psychopath!
