Would you use the same names if your were naming now?

the what would you call a daughter now thread made me think

Would you use the same names for your children if they were born today?

I would for my two daughters (both names mentioned on that thread, both my favourites still.)

But I might reconsider for my son's name - I like it, it suits him but I am not sure if I had a baby today (miracle of human physiology!) I would use it again.

Yes I would, for all three of my boys.

The only name I might rethink is DS1's middle name, though as it turns out he likes it.

Hmmmm tough one.

My daughter's name is classic but I still like it....doesn't suit her though...she is more unique and alternative.

My son....again I still like His name but it has become very popular and faddy I think so no I probably wouldn't choose it now....

I think so - there weren't many that DH and I could agree on tbh, so unless one of us has changed our views massively we'd probably go for the same names again

Yes, even after 11 years of laments from DS that he never sees a pencil set, door hanger etc with his name on it.

Yes, but I'd have a think about the spellings. Our ds's have names that work in both English and Polish (they have a British and a Polish parent), and they all have the Polish spelling. I'd think about that nowadays.

No I can't stand my daughters name now. I really wish I'd have thought more about it. I mean its a nice name as far as names go but just no longer to my taste, and her name does suit her.

No. Both my son's names are nice names but a little too popular for me. The result of a compromise between me and my husband., who have totally different ideas of good names

14 years ago when we named DS1 his name was pretty rare, we got a few raised eyebrows.

Now it's really popular, and dare I say it, a bit 'chavvy'
I do still love the name, but I think the popularity might've put me off.

I'm not sure I would and it's only been two years since I chose it.
DS is called Gabriel, at every appointment we go to he gets called Gabrielle and younger people are too lazy to say it right and just call him gabe-rool
I still love his name... When it's said right.

Gabriel is gorgeous name. I can't use it though. I would if I could though.
I've never understood the Gabriel and the Gabrielle confusion. No one seems to get confused between Daniel and Danielle for example.

Yes, I think. There is another name that I vaguely thought about but for some reason rejected. Sometimes I wish I had thought about it more and used it because I really like it. It's not dissimilar to the name we chose tbh. But overall, yes happy with our choice. Haven't met another with the same name yet.

I think I would have pushed harder to have one of my name choices for dd1. I chose her middle name and I still like that for her first name because it is classic and timeless (and one I've loved since I was a little girl). Also, I remember looking at her in her crib when she was about 8 days old, and another name for her struck quite intensely. I look at her sometimes now and think 'that name would have really suited you!' Even so, her actual name is very pretty It was a compromise between DH and I but it took me about 2y to really warm to (she's 7yo now).

I would keep dd2's name but would not choose the same middle name. Sounds nice but it's too popular.

We are ttc dc3 and I am adamant on a boys first name. There is leeway for compromise for another girl but I won't over-compromise again.

Hard to say. I like their names but with each successive child we haven't used the reserve names. So our reserve for the first was Audrey, had he been a girl. Then we had a girl but didn't call her Audrey. I think the boys name was victor but we weren't decided (I was sure we were having a girl). Then we had a boy but didn't call him victor.

Now I'm pregnant again. The girls name for the last one was Roxanne. I'm not sure we will use it if this one is a girl, although I love it.

Without a doubt, I'd chose the same again. Classic names, not fashionable (I.e. overly popular) but not unfashionable either iyswim, just lovely timeless names.

TheScottishPlay - yy to the named door hanger thing! I'm silently smiling through my kids endless disappointment that their names still haven't made 'the official list'

For this reason alone I'm still very happy with their names although DS has always looked more like he'd suit my second choice of name than the one we chose.

Would have used more or less the same names for all 3 dds.
Am glad we didn't go with Isis though.

In retrospect, that might have been a problem.

My 2 boys - yes definitely I adore their names. Dd - I don't know. I do like her name, I just sometimes wonder if it can seem a bit young as she's growing up (she'll be 12 in January). It can be shortened to a more "mature" name which I always expected her to do but she hasn't chosen to do that yet although I know friends do call her it. She still has a lovely name though, just not sure it will work in another 10 years x

Although I don't dislike his name, I'd choose differently for my 18 year old son. I'd prefer the shortened version of his middle name. My 15 year old suits his name perfectly though. It took a lot of thinking about because his name is the same as the shortened version of my name, which most people know me by, and it felt a bit egotistical to be naming him that but after over a week of trying different names after he was born it was the only one which was him if you know what I mean.

Their first names, which appear on their birth certificates, are shortened versions of classic names and people who don't know us so well assume we just shorten the classic name for ease and call them by the (wrong) full name - they even had personalised Christening gifts with the wrong names on. They also have trouble finding their names on items, you can get the longer versions easily but not the shortened.

DS1 had a compromise name which was chosen from the 2 compromises we agreed on. I sometimes wish we'd gone for the other one. However, when we had DS2 I got closer to what I would have chosen for DS1 given free choice. He has a more unusual name than DS1 however if we'd use the alternative compromise name for DS1 then we couldn't have used the name we did for DS2 as they are difficult to say together.

So after all that, I don't know :)

interesting thread!

ds - I'm glad that dh refused point blank to go with my first choice (Charlie) but I do wish we'd taken longer to decide. While I like the name we chose and it has always suited him, I think we would have done better to go with the name that occurred to us as we were driving to the hospital: George.

dd - we did far better, waiting 5 days until we decided. We rejected 2 other names - and am v glad we did. The name she has ended up with is perfect: strong but pretty, with no nasty nicknames. Plus she's the only one in the school! - So yes, would choose that again in a flash.

DC1 yes - it suits and it is that lucky combination of "well known" and "uncommon" (at least round here) at the same time.

DC2 - Oliver. One of three in his class. I should have had a bit more courage and gone for Kit instead. He suits his name but would suit Kit too.

DC3 - fine but I hardly use it as he's almost universally known by an unrelated nickname which we wouldn't have put on the birth certificate. If I'd been slightly braver with DC2 I could probably have been slightly braver with DC3 and he might have been Robert (Robin) which is a family name that needs reviving.

Adore both children's names. Both are classic and will never go out of fashion - DD name is slightly more unusual (as in not currently all that popular) but both are strong, conventional names.
