Should we choose a different name just because many others hate it?

So, we have been thinking of names and one day the name 'Winter' popped up as a potential name for our little girl... and it just sounded right... you know the feeling?
Winter Lily -last name-
Winter being 1st name. Lily being middle name.

It just felt right for us, we looked at each other and knew we wanted that name BUT the in-laws hate it... and some friends/siblings I've spoken to are not too keen/have no opinion on it.

Should we choose another name or just pick whatever we like?
Winter isn't that awful a name is it? People are called Summer and Autumn, why not Winter?

*she'll be born in December.

It doesn't sound like a name to me. I personally would hate to be called Winter- I'd assume someone called winter is cold and frosty. I'm not keen on the names Summer and Autumn either.

GreenWalls · 26/09/2015 16:06

I like it.

They could shorten it to Win or Winnie I suppose.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 26/09/2015 16:09

Sorry, but really, don't do it. She won't thank you. (And don't forget it's also quite a common surname). If you must, have it as a middle name. Lily Winter has quite a ring to it. Or how about Holly, or Natalia? Both eminently suitable for a Dec baby.

Floggingmolly · 26/09/2015 16:13

Usually I'd say no. But hearing that the name in question is Winter Lily; yes you really, really do...

MrsEdinburgh · 26/09/2015 16:13

I like Winter not so sure about the Lily bit as it sounds like you've bought a plant for Christmas.
However if you like it then use it

Btw I know a girl called Snow.

Lunastarfish · 26/09/2015 16:14

It does sound like a candle but that said choose a name you love. It's your child. My dd has a name which Mil hates and friends have said is lovely but with a raised eyebrow. I don't care - her name is much nicer than the dull names they like.

In the future though don't mention names in advance

SirChenjin · 26/09/2015 16:16

Agree with MrsEdinburgh - it does sound like a festive plant. I kind of like Winter, but I think your surname will be crucial here and I would seriously think of another middle name.

Candlefairy101 · 26/09/2015 16:18

I love it!

MamaLazarou · 26/09/2015 16:58

Go for it, it's lovely. Stick to your guns if you really love it. My son has an unusual name. Loads of people were Hmm at first but I'm glad we stuck with it because DS loves it and it really suits him.

BettyBi0 · 26/09/2015 17:59

It does sound a bit like a scented candle or fabric conditioner or something. I like the name Winter though. It's kind of familiar and rare at the same time

SmugairleRoin · 26/09/2015 18:46

It sounds like a Yankee candle or possibly an actress/pornstar Blush. Now, many people like Yankee candles (I don't, think they're a bit sickly) but I don't think many would like being mistaken for one. I blame January Jones for the acting link.

Critical test with names - would you like to be called it? Someone in a regular office job, middle management or an accountant, would it work on them?

Is it the meaning of the name you like, or the sound, or both? I'm sure people here could suggest a few things.

MamaLazarou · 26/09/2015 18:52

Hahahaha

If we all chose names that we thought would suit an accountant/middle manager, the world would be a very boring place.

Floggingmolly · 26/09/2015 18:54

It's hardly livened up by the addition of people called after Yankee candles...

Wishful80smontage · 26/09/2015 18:56

If youre asking if you sgould change to avoid upsetting inlaws/others then no if you love it -use it. Fwiw my mil and sis both commented they didn't like the name we eventually chose for dd I don't care just meant I haven't told them our short list this time :)
If you're asking what we think about the name then I like it but not with that middle name it does sound like a christmas fragrance range.

SeldomAthleticFC · 26/09/2015 19:00

Don't you guys know how to use Google? Winter Lily is NOT a Yankee Candle, it's a vintage Laura Ashley print. Smile

beaucoupdemojo · 26/09/2015 19:02

I'm a great believer in choosing the name you love. Your family and friends can choose their own babies names - they don't get to choose yours!

My family haven't always loved my choices but my youngest child is 8 and I've not regretted it yet.

That said, the names I loved at 20wks pg were sometimes very different to the names I loved when my babies were actually born, so see if you still love it later.

SmugairleRoin · 26/09/2015 19:03

Mama, it's more to look at whether or not the name suits a grown adult in a boring regular job (which is what most people end up in).
I don't feel Winter is a name many adults will pull off.

Doublebubblebubble · 26/09/2015 19:04

I think it's lovely

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 26/09/2015 19:05

No.This is your child. You call her what you like. With names, it's very easy to please some of the people some of the time, but pleasing all of the people, all of the time is unachievable. Children are named Summer and Autumn and noone bats an eye, so. What's wrong with Winter, although Spring still isn't used is it.

ImperialBlether · 26/09/2015 19:05

OP, Winter isn't a name, it's a season. Yes, you get the odd (usually quite odd) person called Autumn or Summer, but nobody's called Winter. A quarter of all births take place in Winter; there's nothing particularly special about that. Why not choose a name that is a name - there are tons to choose from.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 26/09/2015 19:06

Very very true, Mama.

musicinspring1 · 26/09/2015 19:08

I like it. I would probably use nn Winnie. Your choice!!

Twowrongsdontmakearight · 26/09/2015 19:11

If you like it you use it. I knew someone called Stella Maris (Star of the Sea) and she called herself Maris. Your DD can call herself Lily if she wants but of she's a creative sort she can stick with Winter.

wildstrawberryplace · 26/09/2015 19:15

Imperial, Winter is a name if it is used as such. Perhaps someone somewhere once said "But Rose isn't a name, it's a flower". Winter is a lovely name, and not just because I read Shadow of the Moon (heroine called Winter) at an impressionable age.

OP I think Winter is lovely but personally wouldn't use it with Lily as a middle name because as pps have said, it sounds like a seasonal scented candle. However, despite what the baby names thread would have you think, middle names are basically unused after the initial few weeks except on forms and security checks.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 26/09/2015 19:19

Winter is a name, Imperial. Admittedly not as popular as other season nsmes but a name none the less.
Jenny if you Google the name you will come across s thread comments behind the name. Just been on it. Some. Positive and not so positive comments but that would be the same with any name
