So I'm 20 weeks, already have DS and am carrying another boy. My DP and I hardly agree on many names at all but do have a few.

Arthur
Alexander
Nicholas
Nathaniel
Christian.

I like the names above but am aware that the easily abbreviated names will always be NNs. Alex, Nick, Nat and Chris. Because I'm
Not sure how much I love the shortened versions I'm hesitant and Arthur is cute but I'm not sure.

However today we stumbled across Elliott and really liked it. There is no obvious NN though I'm read El and Eli seem to be used. It has French lineage apparently like DS1s name so I guess there is some consistency there.

One problem is that we were using my surname as the middle name for DS as it can be a forename as well as a surname. We were going to do the same for DS2 but Elliot doesn't work with my surname as a middle name whatsoever sadly. It's not a deal breaker just missing that continuity that would have been nice.

The middle names is hardly ever used. Your ds may have never have to say it.

I would use it .

Lunastarfish · 20/09/2015 16:52

Don't worry and just use it.

My dd has a lovely md but I changed to that from our first choice because with my DP's surname it sounded too similar to a celebritywith the same surname (say for example Ellie Brook instead of Kelly Brook). However I wish now we had just stuck to the original choice as her full name is seldom said

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 20/09/2015 17:11

It would be Elliott Ellis Sa**ll

That's a hell of a lot of E's and L's!! Confused

I think Elliott Ellis might be a bit much. But then again, how many times do people actually say the first and middle names out loud? Hardly ever. Sorry - am not helping.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/09/2015 17:20

No to Elliot Ellis!

Love Christian and think Nicholas is under-used. Arthur Ellis is v sweet, but I have a feeling it's famous - am thinking Victorian criminals, or something to do with Dickens or something - but I might have gone mad there!

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 20/09/2015 17:25

I did think it was a bit bonkers too lol.

I think if we stick to Elliott I'll just choose a different middle name and accept my eldest son carries my surname. It's not a huge deal really, it was just a handy way to keep my surname without hyphenating it with DPs.

Oh OK, Elliot Ellis is a bit much!! Can you add a second md to break it up?

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 20/09/2015 18:10

I could but of course if I go then DS1 will probably ask me why DS2 has two middle names and he only has one.

OP posts:
AlmaMartyr · 20/09/2015 18:11

I'd use a second middle name. Me and the DCs all have 2 middle names, it's great and not the hassle that people seem to think.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/09/2015 18:30

I wouldn't use Ellis at all, but give him a family name that you both like, grandfather preferably but anyone really. Then both boys have a family name as a middle name.

perpetuallybewildered · 20/09/2015 18:33

What about using your mother's maiden name as his middle name?

SlinkyB · 20/09/2015 18:37

I like Elliott, but also wouldn't then put Ellis in the middle.

My ds1 has my maiden name as one of his (2) middle names, but ds2 just has a middle name we love. I can't imagine ds2 whining when he's older that he only got the one middle name. Then again, ds1's first name is very short, and ds2's is long, so they gave a similar flow and amount of syllables.

IHeartKingThistle · 20/09/2015 18:38

I have an Elliot so I obviously think it's gorgeous. We spell it with one T though - looks too much like the surname with two to me.

BalloonSlayer · 20/09/2015 18:42

What about just calling him Ellis?

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 20/09/2015 18:48

That's actually a really cute idea to use my Mother's maiden name instead. Sadly it still sounds terrible lol

The other idea I had was to switch DPs surname and mine on DS2. So DS1 has Ellis Sa*ll and DS2 has Sa*ll Ellis. Would that be totally stupid to have them both with different surnames? DP thinks so.

SanityClause · 20/09/2015 18:54

DS has two of the names on your original list.

Of your list, I think Alexander goes best with your other names. And I love the idea of giving your name as a middle name to both boys.

Mrsindecision · 21/09/2015 06:51

Honestly, I personally think you are overthinking it. Middle names are barely used and Elliot Ellis Surname is absolutely fine imo. It will rarely be used and I think it is lovely to use your surname as the the middle name for your DC. Don't change the 1st name if you've got your heart set on it as you will only end up regretting it. Definitely don't give the boys different surnames - that would not be a good idea.
Good luck!

I liked Ds2 's name so much , that it seemed enough and he never got a middle name. He's never missed having one , or questioned why he's not got one. Really what is the point of them?

CakeRattleandRoll · 22/09/2015 06:28

I agree with pp - Elliott Ellis Surname is fine. You have a good reason for using Ellis and you love Elliott. Don't give your boys different surnames though, that would just confuse everyone.

Oh gosh you lot are so lovely!!

Ok, I shall prevaricate on it for the next few months and see where we end up. I'm not fixated on any one name really at the moment. I might end up just writing them all down in full alongside DS1's name and see if any of them feel right.

Thank you!
