Ava or Anna?

Which do you prefer and why? What are your first impressions on each? Is Ava common??

Anna is great, one of the best names ever. It's simple, feminine and classic. Also multinational.

Ava is nice, but a bit overpopular at the moment I think. I think Eva is more classic, really.

wigglesrock · 15/09/2015 07:55

I like both I have a 4 year old Anna, I'm not sure if its just regional but Anna has always been very popular where I live, much more so than Ava. I know 2 primary school aged Avas.

mrsschu · 15/09/2015 07:59

I like both. Ava is supposedly popular at the moment although I only one of one in north London where I live! Anna is possibly slightly more timeless in that an Anna could be any age - 60, 30 or 3. An Ava is most likely to be under about 5 according to stats.

Kim82 · 15/09/2015 08:02

I do like both names but prefer Anna, it was on our list for dc4. I know of two Ava's born within the last 12 months but no Anna's.

SmugairleRoin · 15/09/2015 08:34

Anna.
Ava is nice but Anna more classic and multilingual I think.

AutumnAttic · 15/09/2015 08:36

So many Ava / Eva /Evie type names around here.

Anna might get a glut of popularity too given the frozen connection.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/09/2015 08:55

Both lovely elegant sweet classy names. But I agree Ava is quite over used, but not everyone is phased by popularity, plus it's obviously popular for a reason.
I honestly don't think children will make the frozen connection with Anna, because in the film as we know. It is pronounced Ahna, not Anna.

TwmSionCati · 15/09/2015 09:00

I really like Anna - it is international and classic.

My Italian neighbour called Anna would complain that the only person who could say her name correctly was my Polish husband Grin you have to say An-na with both N's audible, apparently. I dont think that matters too much though!

Ava - sounds a bit try hard, doesnt Myleene Klass have a daughter called this?

Burnet · 15/09/2015 09:01

Anna is the best.

triathlon · 15/09/2015 09:05

Anna, although I like both.

Vernonon · 15/09/2015 10:28

Love Anna. Dd2 would have been Anna but two friends had used the name.

Sophronia · 15/09/2015 10:55

Anna

KitZacJak · 15/09/2015 12:50

I like Ava more, it seems glamorous like Ava Gardner.

There were lots of Annas and Annes around when I was young and just think it is a bit of a boring middle name type of name.

TwmSionCati · 15/09/2015 12:51

Ava is dreadful, I know it is a different spelling but it just makes me think of Eva Braun.

Devora · 15/09/2015 12:57

They're both lovely, but I would go for Anna: classic and elegant.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 15/09/2015 13:00

Not Ava. It's nice enough but so overdone. Anna is much more classic - it might be popular but it won't date.

squoosh · 15/09/2015 13:04

Anna is dullsville and Ava has been done to death in the past ten years.

So I'm not sure!

BettyTurpinsHotpot · 15/09/2015 13:13

You could maybe bring back Antonia?

squoosh · 15/09/2015 13:18

Oooh, yes. Antonia is nice.

Devora · 15/09/2015 22:45

Anya?

KERALA1 · 18/09/2015 22:48

Anna for sure. Ava is faddish

RubyGrace17 · 26/09/2015 11:15

I prefer Anna.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/09/2015 17:25

Both are dull.

And Ava is just a phonetic spelling of how most other countries (in Europe at least) pronounce Eva. Incidentally I think Eva or Eve are both far nicer.
