Clara or Astrid?

Clara has always been the favourite but having seen the name Astrid in a book I really like it. Her brother is Adam.

Clara Astrid?
Astrid Clara?

I am considering Astrid as a middle name for my bump - my daughters name means Star too.
I have a good friend called Clara I love the name and has good associations for me!

pilates · 09/08/2015 23:36

Clara

florascotia · 10/08/2015 12:17

Astrid does not mean 'star'. It comes from Old Norse words meaning 'god' and 'beautiful/beloved'.

Nannyplum2029 · 10/08/2015 14:38

Clara! Gorgeous name (was on my list, but vetoed by DH).

thepatstack · 10/08/2015 15:25

My name is Astrid. I am now 24 and finally like my name. I was the only Astrid where I grew up (in Essex) and even when I moved to west London, people still commented on my name. So atleast I stood out. Have always been complimented on my name. I don't think it sounds "clunky" that's for sure.
It's prettier sounding than Clara imo but I may be biased Wink
Go with what you love! Doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks tbh.

WhatLizzyDid · 10/08/2015 15:30

Both are beautiful names. Wait and see what suits her best?

LumelaMme · 10/08/2015 15:42

Clara
Astrid sounds like an IKEA dining table.

Raia · 10/08/2015 16:08

Astrid is a cool name.

We had a goat called Clara so it has livestocky connotations for me.

LarrytheCucumber · 10/08/2015 16:13

DH wanted to call DS1 Astrid if he had been a girl. It always made me think of 'acrid'. I taught a very nice Clara once, so would give that my vote.

Dixiebell · 11/08/2015 16:12

Astrid. The pronunciation issue about Clara would annoy me. Astrid is lovely and different.

DirtyMugPolice · 15/08/2015 08:37

Thank you all. We both really like both! Will just see what she looks like and what suits her!

I prefer Clara, pronounced as you intend.

villainousbroodmare · 15/08/2015 13:05

Clara is a timid, sweet, thin child with chilblains and thick specs who chews the ends of her plaits. Her favourite food is jelly. She adores books and has a habit of standing on one leg.
Astrid is an athletic sun-tanned girl who climbs trees and swims in cold rivers. She likes cheese sandwiches and her most treasured possession is her penknife.

Inkymess · 15/08/2015 13:20

Haha I know of 4 Clara's (ages 4,5,7,14 at 3 different schools) and they all strong willed, sporty, bright, tree climbers. Two are avid footballers and the eldest is into science and engineering subjects....

villainousbroodmare · 15/08/2015 13:36

Lol, I think my assoc for Clara is the wheelchair-bound child from Heidi, and for Astrid it's Pippi Longstocking (by Astrid Lindgren) with touches of astride and asteroid!

Inkymess · 15/08/2015 14:02

Haha think DrWho and radio 1 DJ instead !

PrimalLass · 15/08/2015 14:31

I love them both but have a Clara. So call her Astrid as I don't want Clara getting any more popular Grin

RJnomore · 15/08/2015 14:35

Astrid. It's beautiful. My dd1 has it as a middle name.

Clara is horrible. I don't like way it looks written down or the way it feels to say it. It's prissy as well.

PrimalLass · 15/08/2015 14:36

The vowel in Clara is ugly to me. It sounds over-glottalised, like the speaker is struggling to get the sound out. Astrid is strong if that's what you're looking for.

Only if you speak with a particular accent (Claaara). In Scotland it is said with a short 'a'.

PrimalLass · 15/08/2015 14:37

Don't hold back there RJnomore.

PrimalLass · 15/08/2015 14:39

Inkymess - sounds like you know mine (far, far from meek and timid).

Holberg · 15/08/2015 14:47

I think both are lovely, but Astrid has the edge. I know two Astrids. Both are extremely individual people, but quite, quite wonderful.
I agree with villainousbroodmare- same associations for me Smile

PrimalLass · 15/08/2015 14:57

I named my Clara after the one in Heidi. But think of it as 'Clara who walked in the mountains'.

DP didn't want to call her that because it reminded him of 'Long Distance Clara from Pigeon Street. But I won.

SnozzberryPie · 15/08/2015 15:16

I like Clara, partly because of long distance Clara! My first feminist icon Grin

Burnet · 15/08/2015 15:21

They are both nice. I'd probably go with Clara because I don't like siblings having matching initials, ideally.
