Strong, unusual boys names.

We have just found out that DC3 is in fact DS1!

DDs are Hazel & Celeste.

Looking for some help with boys names.

The main criteria are:

• must be strong, nothing cutesy, no ie/y endings.
• absolutely not 'trendy'

-ideally not top 100- this bothers DH more than me.

Surname is quite snappy and begins in M.

My list so far:

• Mark (not convinced this works with surname)
• HUGH, I adore this, DH thinks it is a 'fat kids name'
• Andrew
• Gideon

Names I love but cannot use include Peter and John.

Thoughts on the above, other ideas??

Hugh is not a strong name sorry.

I think Hugh is a strong name, and a lovely one at that.
What about Caleb?

Actually I love Andrew, and quite like Gideon as well, although it probably falls into the 'slightly unusual' camp.

I think I'd look at names popular in the 70s, perhaps Richard, Martin, Paul, Matthew, Christopher, Robert, Gregory, Patrick, Geoffrey, Nicholas, Laurence?

nooka your suggestions are pretty spot on! Christopher, Gregory, Lawrence have been vetoed by DH. Matthew is too popular for DH and too close to our surname anyway.

Hugo I find too twee & too popular. Leo is too faddy.

Hunter is just not us. Too American.

I do very much like Julian, which you reminded me of blue so adding that to the list.

I also thought of Cedric today...

Cedric and Julian are not "strong" names.

I'd be thinking more along the lines of:

Hmmm, not sure any of your names could be described as "unusual" if that's still what you're looking for. My favourite is Hugh which I think best meets your criteria but it's not unusual I don't think. How about Victor or Conrad?

Hugo is fabulous but it's very much the name of the moment, so it will be very common in about 5 years time.

I think by strong I meant 'characterful' and 'manly' rather than insipid. More than literally strong.

We're not after a name that makes you think 'that's unusual' but more one that means our child is unlikely to be one of 4 in a class. The girls have very 'normal' names (I think!) Hazel And Celeste but at numbers 300th odd and 900th odd we don't encounter many of them. Another girl would probably have been hermione.

Not so keen on Robert but ourvye you reminded me of Rupert which I like a lot.

cake Edmund is my grandfathers name! Which would have been a good thing but my grandma is Hazel which we already have so can't really have the pair. It is exactly the sort of thing we are looking for though.

I prefer Edgar to Edmund - that any use?
