What it says on the tin really. Evelyn is our provisional girl choice for dc2. We're thinking we can call her Evie or Eva for short. DH hadn't heard it before, I would pronounce it EVelyn but my dad says I'm wrong and says EVElyn. I don't want her having to correct people all the time when she's older.

Ever-lyn. Eve- sounding names just sound too much like Evil

Both acceptable so your choice. I'd go for Ev elyn rather than the 'eve' sound personally.

Love this, it was going to be DD's name but in the end we used it as her middle name partly because of the ambiguous pronunciation.

EV-e-lyn is the female pronunciation. EVE-lyn is the male version.

Would pronounce it EVelyn. It's my mum's name and would have been the middle name for DC2 if he had turned out to be she. Love the name and can't quite believe how popular it's become in the last few years! It was my great grandmother's name and I also have a 23 year old cousin with the same name. It was pretty unusual when she was born in the early 90's, can't get over how many of them there are now!

"But imo it's a mans name - Evelyn Waugh"

Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also named Evelyn.

yummymango · 03/06/2015 12:32

My grandma was EVElyn. But I also know a young EVelyn. I like both pronunciations - just go with the one you like there are bound to be people who pronounce it wrong anyway.

BathshebaDarkstone · 03/06/2015 12:37

I prefer EVlin. Smile

Marisola · 03/06/2015 12:46

When I was 8, an Evelyn joined our school. We all instinctively pronounced it Ever-lyn, and were surprised to be told it was Eve-lyn. I think both are nice. Perhaps in time she will decide for herself which one she prefers.

blowinahoolie · 04/06/2015 17:46

EVeyln.

I don't know anyone where it's pronounced differently, tbh...

HmmAnOxfordComma · 05/06/2015 15:57

If it helps, I'm another one who always thought it was EVElyn for a male and EVlyn for a female (spelled the same, obviously). These days , I don't think it matters, though. Go with which you prefer.

KERALA1 · 05/06/2015 21:20

Honestly please don't. Evelyn (Eve) whatever way you say it is crazily madly out of all proportion popular. DD is 8 and I swear every other girl is called Eve.

"Mum can Eve come to tea. No not that Eve the other Eve. We played with the other other Eve today, but she was jealous that Eve was coming to tea. Can I invite the other Eve?"

Nooooo Eve is this generations Sarah that name is full.

KERALA1 · 05/06/2015 21:21

Choose anything but Eve. Its so overdone.

Wigeon · 05/06/2015 21:29

Both young Eves I know have mothers called Sarah Grin!

Why not just go with Eva or Evie as her given name? Although IME even with Eva you still get two pronunciations: Eee-va as well as Eh-va.
