I think Dorothy is cool- slightly prefer Dorothea but maybe that's a bit frilly. Ruth and Matilda are both nice, but I've never liked Judith. I would consider calling a girl Jude though.

Adore Magnus! That's the only one of the boys I love. You could nickname Gus, which is quite nice.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/05/2015 08:49

Matilda is the only one of your girls names I like.

Tobias, Magnus and Miles are all nice. Magus is probably the most unusual.

themerchantofvenice · 30/05/2015 08:50

(OP here)

Realised that my made-up surname is a bad example because the h at the end makes all the girls' names sound odd. So let's say our surname is something like Reel-Barker.

I love Dorothy, lots of nice nicknames for it too. Victor is my favourite from the boys list.

afreshstartplease · 30/05/2015 08:52

I like miles

Others aren't to my taste sorry

honeysucklejasmine · 30/05/2015 08:54

I like Ruth best, then Matilda. For boys Tobias (though I prefer "Toby") then Marcus.

IMO, Some of the lads names are a bit imposing. Great if he becomes a 6'5" CEO, but if he's of slight build and a softly spoken bloke, Magnus might be a bit much.

themerchantofvenice · 30/05/2015 09:00

Wow, thanks for the quick responses!

I have wondered about Dorothea too. I like the Thea bit but perhaps four syllables is a bit of a mouthful with our surname?

I know it's just me but although I like Jude as a short form of Judith I can't help seeing it as the German word for Jew when it's written down, pronounced YOO-der. Hmm.

afreshstartplease · 30/05/2015 09:02

Why not just have thea?

MsJuniper · 30/05/2015 09:24

I like Judith and Tobias best.

themerchantofvenice · 30/05/2015 09:29

I do like Thea but would be annoyed hearing it mispronounced as TAY-er or FEE-er!

OP posts:
MamaLazarou · 30/05/2015 09:49

Yes, Thea will be Fear in many parts of London, I'm afraid.

I love Ruth, Dorothy, Marcus, Victor and Magnus from your list. Especially Marcus: such a strong, glamorous name IMO!

Good point MermaidAvenue!

I think it's more that I am not that attracted to the -ie/-y/-ia sounds in a lot of girls' names so by a process of elimination I have got a list of -th names!

Matilda is so popular and I can see Dorothy increasing in popularity as well. I like Ruth and Judith. I like Victor, Miles and Magnus best from your boys list.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/05/2015 12:02

Your girls names.
Rate= Dorothy and Ruth
Slate Matilda and Judith( Judith come on op, I know it's none of my business, very granted, but it's not even a pretty name at least yes although IMO Matilda is a God awful name it's still. Pretty sweet and girly despite my thoughts on it.
Boys names
rate= Gus and Victor great names
Slate Tobias Marcus Miles and Magnus

Elllimam · 30/05/2015 12:04

I love Ruth, strong and unusual. Also like Magnus and Marcus.

themerchantofvenice · 30/05/2015 12:41

You're right Sophronia about Matilda getting very popular. Whilst I'm not hung-up on having a "unique" name I think I'd prefer something less used, so that's one off the list.

I am also having doubts about Tobias on the grounds that he would most likely become a Toby, which is fine but not a name I love. There are also quite a few Tobys around.

Iliveinalighthouse - don't worry, I did ask! The thing is I'm not looking for a "pretty", "sweet" or "girly" name so the fact that Judith isn't in that category is a positive thing for me!

MamaLazarou · 30/05/2015 12:43

How about Lillith or Tannith?

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 30/05/2015 12:48

Ruth is a bit dull and meh. Surprised to say I quite like Judith, I knew a little girl Judith when I was little and she was lovely. Matilda nice but very popular. Not a huge fan of Dorothy either.
I like Tobias and Marcus but none of the other boys names. Really really dislike Gus and Magnus. Gus reminds me of the fat mouse in the Disney version of Cinderella (I think!).

themerchantofvenice · 30/05/2015 12:52

I'm sorry MamaLazarou, I'm sure it's just me but when I say Lillith and Tannith it sounds like I have a lisp and am saying Lilies and Tennis!

I think Ruth and Judith are more well-known and don't have the same potential for confusion.

OP posts:
WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 30/05/2015 12:57

I've just realised I hate the 'us' sound as it reminds me of pus Blush

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 30/05/2015 12:58

Although I don't mind it in Marcus... Weird!

pieceofpurplesky · 30/05/2015 12:58

I don't like Judith or victor but love all the rest. There are quite a few victor's around here. Miles is also very popular (travelling community attend my school and it is a family name).

pieceofpurplesky · 30/05/2015 12:59

Victors. Phone added apostrophe
