I've been liking the name Avia Rose for my soon to be little girl in June.
Do you think it's too different? some of my family and friends really don't like it :-(

The yard thing pookamoo was such ignorant, shortsightedness on the family's part. It comes from a reference to leotards. Ie, Shay was wearing one and as he wasn't called Leo, he dubbed it a Shaytard.

Even though he hadn't meant it to be offensive, it obviously is, and cringe every time I hear it. I agree, I wouldn't want my child associated.

MagentaVitus · 13/05/2015 16:43

Not yard - autocorrect just got me. T not Y.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/05/2015 21:00

Means granny in Catalan

IvoryMadonna · 13/05/2015 21:11

Oh, so parts of words are offensive now, are they? How ridiculous, just listen to yourselves. 'Tard' is not a word.

pookamoo · 13/05/2015 21:27

No, of course "tard" is not a word!

But in slang terms, it is often tagged on the end of other words or parts of words to create insults. Just as bad as using r**d.

Then you only have to look at the "family photo" on the wiki page, where they are all pulling faces, to come to the conclusion that either they are in fact being offensive, or they are really ignorant.

I hopemagentavitus is right.

MagentaVitus · 13/05/2015 21:39

Tard is a slang word, short for retard. I grew up hearing it said to describe my cousin with downs syndrome by our neighbours.

How ridiculous, just listen to yourselves.

Thanks for that.

(sorry to derail your thread OP)

With you magenta I know tard as am insult too

GlitterNails · 16/05/2015 17:10

The photo on their wiki page is one of hundreds they have done each year for a calendar. It's just silly faces, nothing to do with their name.

There has been debates for years on their name - but it's done, they're famous as the Shaytards, and it wasn't intended as offensive.

I cringed the first time I saw it as well, but I understand why he can't change it now.

They're hugely rich from it now, made millions on a deal by Disney.

2boys2girls · 16/05/2015 17:15

Pn/sounds like the place in spain

pookamoo · 17/05/2015 14:03

What magenta said.

Sorry for derailing the thread. These "celebrities" will hopefully disappear before long anyway.

Avia is quite a pretty name and sounds as if it might have something to do with birds (as in aviary).
