Emmeline, Cordelia or Miriam?

This is my last survey, I promise. I just need to sound out my thoughts and see what you wise women think.

Emmeline - DH's fave. I do like it and love nn Emmie. I am worried that she'll be forever mistaken for Emily and I know an Emilia/Emi who is slightly off putting.
Cordelia - love this, but fear it might be a bit too fancy.
Miriam - don't actually live this, but really do love nn Miri or Mim.

I have enormous name regret for Dd2 and I'm anxious not to make a mistake. I want something classic, not too popular and something suitable for all ages.

I love cordellia, it's unusual but very elegant

myneighbourtotoro2 · 11/05/2015 12:23

Cordelia! It reminds me of Buffy but definitely in a good way. Fab name

lilacunicorn · 11/05/2015 12:25

All are lovely but my fave is Cordelia.

DorothyBastard · 11/05/2015 12:28

Miriam is beautiful, recognisable but underused. And those are great nicknames.

IvoryMadonna · 11/05/2015 12:30

I like Miriam. Not a name I come across every day. I once knew a Miriam who was sometimes shortened to Mim. I like the variant Maryam too.

timelyreminder · 11/05/2015 13:45

Miriam is a lovely name, and I quite like Emmeline. Cordelia too frilly IMO.

getbusyliving · 11/05/2015 14:17

I would discount Emmeline as you only 'like' it and there are a few issues around it (bad connotations, worry it will be mispronounced) which outweigh loving the nn, imo

Miriam i would similarly disregard as you say you don't even like it.
Maybe look for alternatives to get the nn Miri/Mim?

Cordelia is your clear favourite so my advise would be that name. As for being too fancy, for some yes it will be, for others no. No name will ever be universally liked, but what matters is that you and your husband love the name.

SheThinksShesPeople · 11/05/2015 14:24

Those are beautiful names. They're all currently on my shortlist too! I think my favourite on your list is Cordelia.

The other two names on my shortlist are Orla and Ursula (just in case you wanted any other similar suggestions).

QueenBean · 11/05/2015 15:15

Sorry to lower the tone but I think "mim" sounds like a word for your lady parts: "ooh ive really hurt my mim doing all that cycling"

duckbilled · 11/05/2015 15:27

I adore Cordelia!

Marisaurus · 11/05/2015 15:29

Emmeline and Miriam are both lovely. Miri is cute too!

LollyLondon · 11/05/2015 15:34

Emmeline (Emmie) is lovely, not so keen on the others I'm afraid!

eae123 · 11/05/2015 15:55

Emmeline is beautiful

Chocolateorangegirl · 11/05/2015 16:05

Emmeline and cornelian are both lovely.

Sophronia · 11/05/2015 19:52

They're all lovely, but Miriam is my favourite.

timelyreminder · 11/05/2015 20:29

How about Miranda with nickname Miri?

CruCru · 12/05/2015 00:00

I wanted Miriam but DH vetoed it.

Rhubarbgarden · 12/05/2015 00:04

I love Miriam.

StampyShortnose · 12/05/2015 00:07

Love Cordelia, Miriam is nice too.

Don't like Emmeline at all, too frilly for me I'm afraid!

Guin1 · 12/05/2015 06:02

Miriam was my first choice for DD, but DH vetoed. Like you, I love nns Mim and Miri, but I also like the full name. If you don't, then I don't think you should choose it. timely's suggestion of Miranda is great. That would have been on my list, but was already taken by my niece.

mummybare · 12/05/2015 06:06

Love Emmeline sand Miriam. Not as keen on Cordelia.

sweetpeame · 12/05/2015 08:08

Really like Emmeline nn Emmie. Don't think it would be confused with Emily, they're spelt quite differently. Cordelia is fine if a little bit pretentious (that might not bother you), not keen on the possible nn's though - Cordy (makes me think of umbilicol cord!) and Delia (bleh). Miriam is fine but a bit dull.

IvoryMadonna · 12/05/2015 12:23

Emmeline and Emily are easily confused when heard. There's no problem when they're written down, but they sound very similar. (Unless you pronounced it Emma-lyne, but I've never come across that)

Coastingit · 12/05/2015 12:32

I like Coco as a nn for Cordelia.

Allthatnonsense · 12/05/2015 13:53

Thank you everybody.

I still haven't made a decision, but it's nice to have feedback. My husbands groans whenever I try to talk to him about baby names and my friends are now avoiding me!
