DH favours current popular name

DH and I like the idea of taking names from the family tree. He was super close with his nan so we've chosen her name as the middle as it's just too old fashioned as a first name. Our frontrunner for first name is a variant on my grandma's name but has been in the top 3 for like 5 years now. I know it shouldn't really matter but it does a bit to me. I like the name a lot but don't want DD to be one of loads! I also don't love any of the common nicknames. Our runner up name isn't a family one, we just both like it, but I dont feel any real connection to it if you know what I mean?

What is the question

I think that these days, there's so many first names out there, that a top 3 name isn't everywhere in the same way that it would have been a generation or two ago. So your DD isn't necessarily going to be one of loads and falling over other girls who share her name just because it's a popular one.

The other thing to consider is whether you'd regret not choosing it if you ruled it out on the grounds of popularity.

We gave DS1 a popular name, and I was a bit worried about it being popular, but we decided that we loved it so much that we'd regret not going for it, especially if it turned out to be not that popular where we live. It did actually turn out to be one of the most popular names round here for boys around DS1's age, but I'm still happy we picked it despite it's popularity.

We had a similar dilemma as we really loved Olivia. Because it was such a popular name we kept considering other names as I wasn't sure about using a popular name. But it was the name we both loved, so we went with it. It suits our little girl, and we still love the name. She's only just in nursery but we've not met any other Olivia's so far and even if we do we just decided it didn't matter. I have a fairly popular name and there was always a few of us in all my classes at school and it has never bothered me, or caused any issues. So a rather long way of saying that I would go with the name you love best.

Elizabeth isn't too old fashioned, it's really lovely with lots of nn potential.

only one Olivia in DDs class. I chose a name for DD which is classic, but has not been in the top 75 since before she was born... and guess what .. there is another girl with DDs name in her class, and another one moved into our street! .. Go with what you like!

I've a 7 wek ej old Olivia and haven't met another one yet despite it being so popular. Everyone is mad for her name!

Popularity wouldn't bother me (my dd has a popular name), but I do prefer Elizabeth, personally

I don't know where are these Olivia's are hiding because I've never met/heard of one under 25.

Aren't there any other family names that appeal to you? How far back have you looked?

Our DS has a popular name that has been top 20 for many, many years. We both loved it and it's the middle name of DH late brother.

We did have a couple of other names that we liked but I know we would have regret not using it because of popularity. We have met babies with our DS name but it doesn't bother us.

I only know two Olivias under about 30! One is 4, the other is 1. I think it's a lovely name. DD has a popular name also which we love. She's 3.5 now and we've only come across one other so far in baby groups/nursery etc. Popular names really bother some people but others not at all. I also have a relatively popular late 70's/early 80's name and I can honestly say I'm perfectly happy with it as an adult.

I know a 3 yr old Elizabeth. I think it's a classic enough name to avoid sounding old-fashioned, even if it's not all that popular for babies at the minute.

I don't know any small Olivia's at all. Maybe it's one of those names that's super popular in some places and almost unheard of in others?
