Cordelia - too pretentious?

Is Cordelia too pretentious a name for a squarely middle class girl to pull off? I love it and DH is keen and there are some great nicknames (Cordy, Delia, Cora, CoCo etc) but I'm worried it's a bit pretentious. We live in a lovely town in the rural SW and she'll be going to the local state schools, I'm worried you need to be super posh or live in Islington or something to pull it off. Other name options are things like Elizabeth, Abigail etc. Thoughts?

I love it too.

AtSea1979 · 08/04/2015 23:23

I knew an adult called Cordelia, she hated it and always called herself Cora.

Floppypotato · 08/04/2015 23:26

I know a Cordelia. Lovely lady!

Khalinda · 08/04/2015 23:29

I think is sounds like a plant but then I think Chlamydia sounds a bit planty too.

PelicanDaisy · 09/04/2015 13:13

I know a little Dilly who is Cordelia

dragdownthemoon · 09/04/2015 19:18

I love love love Cordelia :)

thelittlebooktroll · 09/04/2015 19:20

Love the name. No names are pretentious.

Rhubarbgarden · 09/04/2015 20:20

I don't think it's pretentious, but it's not a name I like. Too fussy for me. Delia is nice though.

NerrSnerr · 09/04/2015 20:21

I love it too. She was the best character from Buffy and Angel.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 10/04/2015 14:07

Fab name!

Heels99 · 10/04/2015 14:10

I like it. But yes it is deffo 'posh'

NeedsAsockamnesty · 10/04/2015 15:14

Heels, what makes it 'posh' to me it's just a name not unlike Olivia or Pandora or Elizabeth

BossWitch · 10/04/2015 15:21

Love it, so pretty and lots of nickname options. Also a name that grows up with her, iyswim. Not pretentious.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 10/04/2015 15:37

It's nice. I also like Miranda, Silvia and Rosalind, if we're talking Shakespearean. But why is it that hardly anyone would choose Portia?

Is it cos it sounds like a car?Grin

Threeplus1 · 10/04/2015 17:12

my best friend's sister recently had a little girl and has named her Cordelia, nn Cordy. It's not a favourite of mine, but it's perfectly fine

ems1910 · 10/04/2015 17:15

Gorgeous! a friend of mine has called her little girl this, nn Cordi. Beautiful!

South West and not posh too! :)

GatoNaranja · 10/04/2015 17:17

I really like it but it will almost remind me of the spiky bitch-friend in Margaret Atwood's 'Cat's Eye'!

GatoNaranja · 10/04/2015 17:18

*Always

DrLizAsher · 10/04/2015 19:14

Thanks again for all the opinions. I feel very positive about it now. I imagine she'll be a bit of a tomboy as we're both sporty so I can see Cordy fitting well but she'll have options if she wants something a bit more delicate!!! All opinions appreciated, even the less keen, thanks a lot!

Cordy is awful! But Corry is nice and not too girly.

TheOldestCat · 10/04/2015 20:54

I love it.

kpodwyer · 10/04/2015 21:01

When I hear the name Cordelia I always think of her who starred in The Baron TV programme. I think was Sue Lloyd who also starred in crossroads.
A very nice name.
